I think the joke days of LR are over, they seem to have a well engineered sorted product from my observations. When you look at issues with cruisers and the D4D motors in Toyotas and then the joke that has been Nissan and the 3l I think the Disco holds its own, the numbers for comparison are less I would think . Also then compare the fit out they are well ahead of anything the Japanese are offering IMO.

It sounds like you may have made a decision there Jim???????
LR are still odd in the way of British Engineering - some things you still look at a scratch your head 'why did that do it like that????' Especially when they need to take the body off the chassis to replace parts (eg turbo).

I reckon the D5 in 2015 will be interesting to see if rumors hold true. Full alloy chassis (still both ladder and monocoque) which will reduce the weight by 500kg, but no change to the gvm - so over a 1100kg of load in/on the car.

Nah not yet mate, just looking at yours and a few in a dealers and speaking with trade mates. But you right about options, seems every option is either $900, $1400 or $4000!

Stop picking on my BT-50. What did it ever do to you??? The expanda likes being towed by the BT-50 a whole lot better than by our Nissan. They co-operate well together and cut the fuel consumption by 30%. To be honest I don't know how BT's came up in this conversation since they don't even fall into the category for 4wd of the year. But what would you know it... it won it's category for the second year in a row http://theage.drive.com.au/photogal...2012-best-ute-of-the-year-20121128-2ads3.html In 2011 it beat the Range 6 vote to 3! (haven't seen how many for 2012) Maybe BHP just wanted a substandard ute????
BHP would always pick the Ranger now as it is 5 star. BHP are one of the first mines groups to allow the purchase of only 5 star utes for the sites. Navara and Hilux until the new models come will lose sales to the mining industry. The BTfugly will not be picked as Mazda dont do massive fleet pricing like Ford, Nissan, Toyota and Holden. Mazdas focus is on private and business buyers. Plus they make the mines sites look messy :flame: :) Just kidding. At least we all agree on Pandas been the best van :)

You cant bag out a L/R D4 unless you have had the experience of actually driving one !

I didn't like the square box shape at first but drove a mate's HSE D3 and couldn't beleive the comfort, handling, ride & power was awesome.
Had a 2010 LTR Colorado and the wife has a 2008 X-Trail so the need of a 7 seater with 3 kid's was needed as one would always have a friend tag along, and needing the towing capabilities of around the 3,000kg mark the L/R won hand's down, 3rd row seats can fit a 6' adult in comfort, whole luggage area lay's flat, rear A/c works well.

Only Problem, cant get the missus out of it !!

quote - They couldn't find any other vehicles to put up against it ????????? Hows that work?

However from the article;
they almost didn't award it cos it wasn't 5 star NCAP rating, only 4
"2 days off road adventure" - video mostly showed it on a race track (I spose that's off-road), and on road, a grassy hill in someones backyard, and a river crossing where someone left a hose on. Impressive
"Judges weren't as impressed with the five-speed auto..."
"There was a hint of steering kickback on rough roads..."
"The only niggle was some plastic underbody trim that went awash - literally - in a creek crossing; not the sort of thing you expect from an off-roader claimed to be capable of fording water more than half-a-metre deep." (mind you the video shows the water crossing as about 100mm deep)
"Another black mark was the clunky foot-operated park brake that could dig into your shins and was generally poorly positioned."
"On the road it's not quite as composed and judges pointed to its spongy feel during the dynamic exercises on a track. But while it felt sloppy and would tend to push its front wheels wide (or understeer), its stability control system was progressive and helpful and the big Jeep never felt wayward."

There were more negative comments in the article than positive :D

Although it is a great vehicle (for second best), that award article and video from Drive (commonly known as Drivel) really didn't do it the justice it deserves. A shame really

You've given this way too much thought AJC LOL! Like the fireside chat We had the other day, all modern fourbys are pretty amazing. If you don't belive me just go and drive a early FJ40 or G60 patrol!

Right on Jim. Don't think my back or bum could cope now with my first 4x4, a much loved Orange & Cream (and rust stained) FJ55. Winding down the tailgate window today would probably bring on a heart attack.
Mind you, those bar tread tyres never seemed to wear out.

You put forward some great points AJC, i agree with your logic, most 4wd of the year awards are pretty loose at defining the scope of what qualifies.
