You use an Amphibian when plugged into a 10 amp circuit, though when using it you still can't run all your 240 appliances this can be at home or some Showgrounds but if you have a 15 amp circuit to plug into then no need for the amphibian. It would only provide the same protection that your circuit breaker RCD does in the van .
If your using an Invertor generator like a Yamaha or Honda then the chance of a spike are slim I don't know about some of the cheapies though.

We have a Honda so by the sounds of things that should be OK. Can you tell me what protection a surge protector gives at the Setec plug? Does it just protect the Setec?

Yep it will just protect the Setek I must admit I haven't had anything fizz out at all because of a spike in all the years only at home usually from lightning. You can buy a replacement for the breaker/RCD which is a surge/RCD unit. Just a household job nothing special for van.

Thanks @Drover I was trying to protect the whole van from any surges that might happen but it seems a bit of a hard task trying to locate a 15 AMP surge protector. I might just keep a couple of surge protectors in the van for when we both play on our laptops. We have surge protectors at home on everything so was trying to do the same for when we are travelling. I might also be a little over cautious if others don't bother ;)

I'm looking to do exactly the same thing @Pauline

If I come up with a reasonable solution, I'll post it.

Same here will get into it when I get home but think I will probably go for individual units for things, I run my laptop from a 4 point board which has a surge unit in it .........I do recall seeing a builders 15amp power block with surge protector somewhere that would be an easy solution, just run the power thru it into the van and hang it off a hook underneath.................................have a couple of ideas for AC that I will look at......

Yes it would be great to find a 15amp surge protector and then the whole van will be covered as you say @Drover. For the time being I have purchased individual surge protectors for inside the van until I find one, not sure if they are available but will keep trying. The trouble with only having protectors in the van is that the aircon would not be protected for the times that that it is used. How's the weather where you are? Have you managed to avoid the wet?
