Built in Rubbish bin

Has anyone here pulled out their Microwave and replaced it with a bin?

We've removed the Microwave (we rarely use it) and have decided to replace it with a slide out bin (we always seem to end up with a bag of rubbish on the bench - it looks bad, is always in the way and probably isn't the best thing anyway).

I can't find anything "off the shelf" that will fit - nor can I easily buy a small sheet of matching panel from Jayco.

So I was thinking of somehow mounting little rails, screwing a sheet of ply between them and cutting out a hole to drop a "storage tub" in (preferably one with a lid). For the front panel I will make it a whiteboard (so we can quickly write "stuff we need" to remember (such as what we need at the shops)

Looking for inspiration if anyone has done this before.

Rubbish disposal is an issue when on the road or in a van park. First issue I see with your plan is do you really want to keep extra rubbish in your van? We purposely buy small Garbo bags so we have to get rid of them often, even leaving rubbish in a bag or bin when you go out for a day locked in the van does not end well, we also rarely use our microwave but find it the perfect place to store the stove top kettle, tea coffee bikkies as we have never had ants in the microwave, where is your microwave cabinet situated?,if like mine it’s high mounted you will continually be walking past your rubbish face high and all rubbish gets a whiff about it, I have been accused of looking at the bad side of things but the FOR list should be longer than AGAINST list before you go too far . A small swing top tidy outside the door works for us and keep the bags going to the bins. Happy planning

I have often thought about one but nothing worth doing comes to mind as in house bins like that always seem to mean more cleaning... So far we have a small swinging lid job that sits on bench using the old woollies shopping bags which I saved millions of, it gets dumped often with a big bag on Jeeps roof rack for when we go to town, leaving bins outside off grid is asking for trouble......... the small plastic bin so much easier to clean than a cupboard....... my daughters new age has a bin cupboard, it reeks after day one.

On the 2016 it sits low - under the sink. We would still empty the rubbish on the same frequency - but it will be under a cubboard with a lid rather than in a bag on the bench.

Should work fine, was a common cheap way for poverty pack cabinet makers to fit a bin. Id probably get one locking runner so it cant slide out on its own

Got it finished so it was functional and went away for 2 weeks - works like a dream now :)

Still need to "finish" it aesthetically.

It's basically a 27L tub I had lying around. We stick a small garbage bag and one end and dump recycling in the other - about 90% of the rubbish was recycling in the end.

I started with a set of self closing rails from Bunnings but these were a little hard to open so changed them out for normal rails.

Also used a plastic handle I left over (the famous 2016 handles were all plastic and swapped under warranty for alloy ones as they broke). Will buy and replace with an allow the in the future.

I used an old piece of white Melamine I had lying around and tried to wrap it in Whiteboard wrap - but this was very thick and I could get a neat wrap around the sides. I think I will just neaten the edges with iron on edging and either stick the whiteboard onto the face of the drawer OR maybe just a small map of Aus. I need to do something to make the door "different" as the white currently just looks odd against the standard Jayco woodgrain wallpaper finish.

Anyway, small wins......

Good news is there was no smell after a few days and the bench was a lot cleaner with no bag of rubbish on it, being moved around and in the way on general.

We have a rubbish bag holder on the outside of the van next to the door, Croc brand with a fitting attached to the van with a clip on lid and you hang the bag on it. We then have a canvas type bag like a big backpack that is strapped to the spare wheel (Bought it from Kings) where we put the rubbish bag if we have to keep until disposal. Works well and no smell in the van.

well done ,you can always use the odd white surface as a notice board so the missus can list endless jobs for you to ignore

Not to mention the scrub/bush turkeys who like to rip and tear any interesting bag left outside, no matter the height. It's amazing how high they can jump/flap when they think there are food scraps for the taking! Many a camper has come back to camp site after a walk, to find their place like a rubbish dump - stuff scattered everywhere!!!

I'm with you Drover...............
Can we force Macca to show pictures ??
I don't usually advocate phsical violence but I think in this case...........................

Give him time oh anxious one ( @Disco Duck ) he's in Victoria so using cameras is probably frowned upon, he may have to be sneaky.................. and probably way better than anything I could knock up ...............

@Disco Duck @Drover

Nothing sneaky other than me being lazy....

Anyway this is a photo stolen from the internet (not my exact van model but gives you an idea of how it looked with the microwave in)
Standard.jpg

Most of the below was using stuff I had lying around. Total cost of project was around $40 ~($18 for the handle, $5 for the Melamine trim, $8 for the whiteboard contact and $10 for the rails)

I had to add some internal supports for the rails as the flimsy board used by Jayco wouldn't cut it (Just bits of pine ripped down to the right depth). Then screw rails onto the supports.

rail_support_2.jpg

Add a face to it (was a piece of Melamine I found lying around). Just trim the edges with the iron on stuff from Bunnings and fitted a handle.
Closed.jpg

I have covered the Melamine with whiteboard contact from Officeworks. Might be handy for jotting down notes as we travel (and with notes on it/being a whiteboard it will stick out less I hope)

The tub is around 27L. Rubbish in the bag on the right, recycle squashed and in the tub on the left.

I did use the self closing hinges first, but it was to hard to open (well not hard, but was placing more pressure on the shitty door catches than I like) so i swapped them out for normal rails.

I like that idea, it looks very good quite nicely done @Macca_75 , Mrs D would like one not sure if I have a spot available but I would line the cupboard with sheet aluminium so I could clean the spills up easily going on past experience we are messy...

Not a bad idea about the aluminium lining but I don't think it will happen :biggrin-new:
