Hi all, regular reader of this forum and I am planning a trip to Central Aus from Melbourne. I was alerted to an app called Wikicamps and to be honest it is a wealth of information if you are planning to head anywhere in Aus!. Best $5 bucks you'll ever spend full of free camps, van parks, pics and comments. Plenty of advice on roads, sightseeing spots and heaps more....highly recommend it

Works out a lot cheaper than books. We have used it a lot after finding it here. Even has a satellite setting function for those with a dish. Really cool....

Does it require internet connection when your using it, to locate the camps? I have an Ipad I am interested in downloading it onto, but only WiFi enabled. Cheers Ben

Hi Ben

Some features require internet access. (User comments etc)
However most features seem to work without access.
I just put my iPad into aircraft mode and was still able to search and plan trips.
Hope this helps

We have a stick for iPad, but you can download maps and info to iPad so it's there to use , just don't think you'll get your location icon on map.

The wifi only ipad does not have gps capability so will not show your location on the map as you travel but I have read you can get an attachment to make it a gps, we have the 3G version but do not have a card in it and only use it at home in the wifi, I download the stated off line content before traveling. Over time this app has saved us considerable time and money with cheap and free overnight stops on our travels.

Seems I have created some interest! What I have used the most is the comments on particular campsites and van parks to help decide where to stop overnight.
Uluru here we come!

Comments alone on Wikicamps shouldn't be your sole judgement for a site. Not every site is to everyone's taste and I've often seen comments only a few days apart to have wildly differing amounts of praise and disgust. Often these have been about the way people were supposedly treated by staff/management at the location. Could well be that some bring out the worst from locals with expectations that they are somehow entitled to preferential treatment or fail to understand that prices are significantly higher in remote areas. In the case of comments about commercial operations it could even be competitors make disparaging comments for all you know. Then there's the genuine idiots, and judging from letters to the editors of newspapers this country is more than oversupplied with them.

I always take comments with a grain of salt unless you see a trend. Some people just like to complain and others think that $30 a night for a site means they get chocolates left on the caravan pillows after they clean your van.
All it takes is the people in front of you to destroy the shower block that was clean 5 mins ago.

Just brought it and having a look around would like to start free camping soon, Big4 or the like with family of 6 does add up if we go every 2-3 weeks.
Or maybe do a night or two on the way up to Gold Coast in September
