Which one to get? Few concerns

Hi all, been reading for a while, just signed up so I though I might ask a few burning questions.

I'm not new to the expanda having had a 12.37 about 18 months ago which we sold to get a bigger pop top van with the bed inside, well a few things got in the way and we ended up with a camper trailer but we're ready to jump back into a jayco again.
There are only two of us (at the moment) and we can't decide between 3 models (we'll be buying used 2006-2010)

Originally the 14.44-3OB was what we wanted, then we were considering the 16.49-3OB but I have just found an awesome 17.55-3OB discovery with a little stretch to the budget required. The discovery is pretty much perfect for us and what we wanted when we sold our expanda HOWEVER, it's HUGE.
We like our beach camping and I have no concerns whatsoever about the 14.44-3, but the bigger two worry me a bit, there is only 164kg difference laden between the expand a 16 and discovery 17 but you can put an extra 127kg of stuff in the expanda. And 31kg difference in the empty ball the discovery being heavier even though it's tandem?

I will be towing with my 3.2d 03 Pajero which will have a 2"lift and bags shortly.

I am worried about comfortably towing the bigger two off the Tarmac, I don't think there's much between the two bigger ones

Is there much difference between towing a tandem or single axle van on the beach, better/worse. and I don't think I'd be able to take the discovery over to Fraser? But would I be able to take the others anyway? I'm not planning on hardcore off road just a bit of beach and if I colt take one to Fraser and not another that may sway me.

I towed out 12.37 behind out disco2 on the beach many times with ease and I've never had to put the Pajero in low on the beach yet with or without the camper trailer (1000kg odd), but it's my first 4wd with IRS/IFS so unsure.

Would like to hear from those of you that have any of these models or the 17/18 expandas for your thoughts.

Hello and welcome DiD Exceed, I think tandem axle would tend to did a trench and bog a bit in sand if you had to turn sharp. My brother in law was on fraser not long ago and said there were heaps of big vans and boats being towed, each to their own but like I've said on another thread there's no way I'd tow 2 - 2.5 ton on sand......way too stressful for me.
About 18 months ago I was talking to a bloke in a caravan park who had a 16' outback and he took it to Fraser with his diesel patrol and said never again!!

Cheers.

:decision:I reckon playing in the sand it all boils down to HORSEPOWER and tyre pressure as burnsy said a tandem will bog down on a turn thats where the Hp comes into it .. I wouldnt take the risk with a small diesel with a tandem anyway i think youll get away towing a single axle and drive to the conditions and be prepared .. just my thoughts anyway
cheers Russell

Thanks for the replies, Well the 17 I liked just sold and I'm not to keen on any of the others available, I think I've narrowed it back down to the 14.44-3 it's a size I'm more comfortable with and I think I'll get further with it off the Tarmac if I wish, and we don't really need the extra bed as found on the 16.49-3, just more canvas/flyscreen to get damaged and more setup, plus I'd miss out on the front boot. Looks like I'll be off to Townsville next week to check it out:)

Being another 14.44.3 owner, Chartrock sums it up. There are four of us (two toddlers). An annexe is a must though for that extra space, especially with the rugrats
