Dreaming of the extended holiday with the family (>6 months) in the Expanda with maximum freecamp. Electricity has never been a problem for us. Water is a constant issue.... Four people (one shower) at 20lt per day equals 100lt per day for a family of 4 unless Daddy doesn't shower, and then mummy not happy.

An extra days camping is fine but the big killer is washing the cloths. We have never washed daily cloths while camping (we have done it in a laundry elsewhere). I don't mean plugging a little washing machine in when your in a caravan park or washing your grundies in the shower, I mean supplying the water and the power while your remote to wash all your cloths (and towels etc).

WHAT HAVE PEOPLE DONE TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM???

I read somewhere if you wash in wool wash, you don't need to rinse .... so there's a 50% water saving. Power for us is a generator ... water, although we haven't required it just yet would be from a river I suppose so you'd plan your washing for when your near the water source such as the river

Our water consumption showering is ridiculous...Maybe turning the hot water off may help? I remember camping with a beer fermenter and a $20 12V hand shower and all was as you say.

Agree with cracka....with care it's possible to shower 2 or 3 with the 22l in hot water supply tank. All you do is wet down, turn off tap, soap and clean then turn tap off to rinse off.

As for washing when away from caravan park facilities....take a good bucket with a tight lid, add washing powder, let it agitate when travelling or agitate yourself if not on the move and wring it out out by hand. It's possible, feasible but not as good as an auto washing machine but definately doable.

There are some lightweight hand operated washing systems on market if the above doesn't appeal.

Works for us and we add a 12v pump to access other water sources, a rainsaver gutter collection system, adequate 12v power and treat it as a challenge to be overcome, not a limiting factor.

Mind you, we don't always look as tidy as we might but we are clean!

when the kids were little, and we had just started to camp (in a tent)
I made something like this - 20L bucket with lid, put a small hole in the lid, put a sink plunger in it
voila
a hand washing machine

similar to this

then after a few years ( and a few buckets) I picked up one of these at a garage sale

worked well, until I left it in the bush by mistake (had to pack up in a hurry - a storm was coming through)

Even though we have the onboard bathroom we dont use it free camping. We take away a Coleman instant HWS so we can use any water source including non potable water for showering. Weighs bugger all and takes up very little room, with a bucket of water you can use it the shower cubicle.

We have a little dual tub machine you fill with a bucket.. Ensuite sites been good fill empty in shower. Around $150 new
The new big beast has 3 tanks and washing machine see how we go first time without mains
@davemc, your a way different camper now. I wasnt fussed either way with the shower and happy enough with a combo shower/toilet ... but no, no, no, Princess Crusty threw the financial constaints to a place only @Smergen could recover it. She was all over the delights of the full bathroom ... and washing machine, which i thought was a wank. After a few uses of both, you, like I will be a fully paid up member of the Bathroom / Washing Machine Appreciation Club. I even use the caravan washing machine, and was surprise as all hell when Princess Crusty told me we had one just like it at home ....... "where" I said ;)
