Hi All, Have just ordered a new 17.56.1 Expanda and am concerned about the ground clearance and am thinking of changing the axles to underslung to raise the ride height. I would appreciate any thoughts on whether or not it is worth doing this. Thankyou :)

did you order an Outback or touring model? If "Touring" the yes I would probably have them underslung because touring models tend to sit very low. An Outback should be fine as standard as they use a different axle (from what I was told )

It's one of my favourite mods.
$400+ from memory (had it done by Jayco in Geelong).
No issues at all with handling.

Have ordered the touring model but was concerned about ground clearance as they looked to be low.

Do a search on the forum for underslung. There have been a few people that have had it done. I don't think I have seen a comment yet of anyone that was disappointed they had done the mod.

When ordered new it is a really cheap upgrade, I think I have heard dealers say under $200.

My last van was a touring model with underslung axles, it was great with heaps of ground clearance handled no different from when it was standard.

BUT I'll be honest, in my experience when it came time to sell nobody wanted it, plenty came to look but they all walked away wanting either an outback or a standard (Low) touring van.

A funny story from a potential customer who knocked us back, decided that an outback would be better suited to travel along the 4WD tracks he planned to traverse, I was like ohh OK what are you planning to tow it with (thinking he might have had a decent 4WD at home or planning on getting one) his reply: Just this car, pointing at his XC90 Volvo o_O

When I had my old touring model, I had a few instances where that tyre carrier bottomed out. If I went for a touring model today, I would definitely think about it.

Don't discount the XC90 as being "soft" off road, they are rather capable.
I had an '06 XC90 V8 and it was a great car, but never really took it offroad.
With decent tyres it would comfortably tackle places like the GRR and others where you could take an Expanda.
Found this..
