If I still had the boat would be an ideal option to keep in touch if things went pear shape and couldn't get in touch with the local sea rescue group

Not a terribly scientific review.

As a rule VHF had greater range than UHF.

In marine use (which requires a license to operate) the marine rescue bases usually have radio towers to get their antennas up as high as possible, and the boats only have the curvature of the earth to get in the way.

I'd love to have a citizens VHF band for land use, but alas is only UHF or the old 27MHz ( which is all but dead these days)

With a decent antenna and 5 watts in a vehicle you can get between 3-15 depending on the terrain.

With a 2.5 watt portable, it would be less than half in most cases.

good points

I know my F-i-Law has a marine UHF and also a VHF to listen in where he lives (coastal town way north of Perth)

was thinking if it was any good as a standby, like @dagree said - if and when I get a canoe / boat...................
