Hi guys just a question on towing heights. I have a ford territory 07 model and I'm wondering if I'm going to run into problems towing an outback flamingo. Has anyone had experience with this combo?

G'day kyoshofw05. I see you tow your 14.44-4 with an AU series ll. We are looking at towing a 16.49-4 on road which is 120kg heavier with an AU series 1 wagon and was wondering how your car copes?

I tow an OB 14.44-4 with an 07 territory, plenty of get up and go but as Kyosh says it likes a drink too!
You can buy different height tongues for your vehicle so you should have no problems getting your height right. I don't know if the ball height on jayco campers is as woeful as it is on the OB expanders but you can see in the photo how low i had to go to get it to sit level. I have tried a few local places to get the ball height lifted on the van but none of them were willing to move it.

Just a couple of points to be aware of for towing on the pre 2012 Territories.
Engine cooling. Their cooling system is adequate for general use, but for extended towing and very hot weather it is important to make sure there is nothing resticting airflow into the radiator. for example the standard size vic number plate hangs down into the grill opening. I would recomomend either folding the lower section of the plate, or getting a slim line plate.
The shadecloth screens that so many peopel have reduces airflow significantly. If you are in an area that does not have a locust plague. get rid of it! You may think these two things would have a negligable effect, but I have seen the cooling system airflow simulations, and it is significant.
The other thing is transmission. The old 4 speed is a very strong aussie built trans, but nothing kills a trand like heat. An aftermarket trans cooler is VERY good insurance.

Boots why don't you get the jayco spacer I have seen some other guys use to raise the ball height on the van?

Hi Adjo, believe it the au is pretty good on towing. All l done extra was bigger trans cooler, disconnected from the radiator and heaver rear springs. the only reason l'll sell it if l buy a 4x4. Oh and on gas. Around town l leave it in 3 and once on a flat road l put it drive, l sit on the limit also.

My mate use to tow his Swan OB with his wifes Territory (petrol) with standard towbar, he could have done with a WDH hitch or at least airbags as the Terri use to drag it butt a bit but think that was more due to his loading in the rear, Yep plenty of power but as said likes to drink

They now tow it with his Pajero.

Have tried both the Local Jayco dealers including the same one that fitted chartrocks spacer but they will no longer do the modification. I think jayco head office may have put a stop to the practise. not really wanting to make up my own due to the possible insurance ramifications.

Was the spacer a factory accessory?
I thought it was an accessory that came from Canberra Jayco.

The spacer was an attempt by some dealers to help OB owners get some realistic height for their tow ball. It was never a mod sanctioned by jayco. The dealers got the spacers made locally, some like chartrocks used a solid 50mm chunk of steel and others opted for 50mm box with supports inside. Some dealers may still offer it to help their customers but unfortunately not around here. :(

There is an old thread here on the subject.

Does it matter if the van does not sit perfectly straight/level while towing? I have a standard tow ball and from the pictures shown mine would have to sit higher at the front.

It's important to get it as level as possible Les. Certainly not higher at the front. There are adjustable hitch tongues available that should help you. If you don't have a receiver type tow bar fitted, I'd be investing in one as a priority.
