Tolls?

Hi all, we head off in 6 weeks for a 6 month lap of our great land and the wife asked me last night what we do about paying tolls. Coming from a state where they don't exist (yet!) I would really appreciate any guidance on what we should do in preparation.

Hey Mate, I would read up on it. There are some traps depending on what state your in.

We have an etag ( city link) & recently travelled on a Brisbane toll road, & a Sydney tollway. The tag beeped in Sydney, but didnt go off in Brisbane. Usually if the tag doesnt work, they take a photo of your rego, & you dont hear anymore, but they took the photo of the caravan rego, & then sent us a letter requesting payment of the toll, plus $10.21 administration fee. A phone call to them said we should of had the van rego linked to the car rego, & there was nothing they could do, we had to still pay the full amount. What a trap!!!!!

Thanks for that @roynrel , it was something I hadn't considered, but I can see how it might happen so I will get on to linking the van to my tags.

so if they are charging you for the van then they are saying the car can go through to toll for "free" then as it is the van they are saying hasn't paid ????? So does that mean EVERY trailer whether it be a 6x4 box trailer or bike trailer has to be linked to your tag ?? Sounds like BS to me, I'd be asking to talk to a supervisor before paying that one.

I have been through the toll many times up here with the van an have not got it linked to my tag and never had a problem. It's the tag that didn't register so it's there problem with a faulty reading not yours for it not working. If it's a valid tag, has credit and is registered to the vehicle towing then you should not have to pay for there faulty reading.

Should I get an eTag for Vic and one for Bris to play safe?
How long do they last for?
Do I register my van reg as well as vehicle?
Seems like they take pics from rear if tag fails to register.

My victorian E-tag worked in Brisbane, no issues

Here in brisbane we were told that our E-Tag works in all other states so you should be fine.

Just make sure that you phone the advertised number if the tag doesn't beep. That way you won't get charged an admin fee.
