Toilet Chemical

Hi all, before we bought our 18' we used a porta potty with our 16-49-1 and had it in the "cubby room" off the annexe. I have always used thetford chemical but one of my mates suggested Bio Magic as it's bio degradable and available from camping shops so I thought I'd give it a go in the new van. The good part is you use the same chemical in both top and bottom tanks.

Now I have always said to my wife and kids to only do number 2's if it's absolutely necessary, otherwise use the amenities, as I'm the one who has to empty it. But every now and then I get...."I didn't have the key" or "I was busting"! I have always managed to hold on untill I get to the amenities so don't know what's going on there but with the Bio Magic it still stinks!!

I will either go back to thetford or try Nappi-San as a few grey nomads has suggested to me.....What do other people use and find effective?

Cheers.

I think the chemical brand I use is called chemsol or something similar without going out to the shed to check thats what our local Jayco sells. I do find the Thetford is better though in regards to eliminating odour.

I use exclusevily "Homebrand Napisan" and a drop or two of eucalyptus in the flusher :)....l

Works a treat, and my family refuses to use the amenties when we have a loo in the van.

If I make any comment they will tell me to take the van back and get one without a loo :)

Thanks guys. Expanda I see your families point but do they empty or is it your job only? The Napisan sounds like it's worth a try! :)

Cheers.

Yep the napisan is great and we only use this nothing else just use a lid full or so at each empty and clean out.

One point just make sure the toilet paper you get is biodegradable or at least breaks down easily enough as often this is where people come unstuck as if you get paper that is hard to break down in water it won't work to well.

Best way to tell is try a few different toilet papers from friends / family or the shop that is definitely "unused" :) and chuck them in a jug of water and see how easily they break down.

Some are stronger than others and obviously you want the one that breaks down the best but is also not to thing if you catch my drift :pray:!!!

In terms of who empties, well to be honest the wife empties it most times but I will tell you that we share it 50 / 50 but this year I bought a trolley so I strap it onto it for the kids and they can wheel it down to the dump point and Ill empty it in so a shared job by all which I think is fair....

50/50 sounds real fair to me, might have to talk to my wife about that! Thanks for the tip on the paper.

Cheers.

I planned to have a policy of "You use it, you empty it". But I must admit I've been one of the main customers! I do the emptying and in truth I'm happy to do it because I know it's done properly and is all set up correctly. Also, the wife has lots of other things to get on with. So far it has not been a bother.
We use the Thetford blue and although I cant compare it seems to be pretty good. I've read all sorts of stuff in the past about napisan and other cheaper options, some good opinions and some bad. I'm just happy to use the commercial stuff. I've also got some Thetford green to try out when I run out of Blue.

I've used Nappisan (Generic Brand) with good results and will continue to use it, though currently using the Green stuff Theford, also good and had no odour problems, have also used the drop in sachet type things also work well and no mess, Have one used the stuff for top tank (pink) once that was the sample that came with the van, once that run out I've only used water in the top, some say good quality dish liquard iin top tank or few drops of Eucalyptus oil,

I found that 3 ply paper doesn't break down as well.

Secret mens business!

I don't have any problem with servicing the cassette after family use.

Have tried a number of different commercial products including Home Brand nappy wash - but have gone back to Thetford blue and pink.

For those of you that use or have used Nappisan what doses do you put in? Both tanks?

Cheers.

Using the blue Dometic branded stuff at the moment in holding tank. Could be rebadged Thetford stuff but noticed no odour at all last use. Going to try the Napisan/Eucalyptus oil recipe though as I suspect it won't dye my fingers. I always empty the cassette but trade off a few other routine chores for the privilege, there's never any argument. Just remember to not make it look as easy as it is.

We used the cheapest sodium percarbonate product around(nappy san). The cheapest coles/woolies/aldi brands you can find. On our 3 month trip that is all we used, with some disinfectant, eucalyptus and sometimes dishwashing detergent in the top tank for sanitation, smell and cleaning.Never had a problem or smell. Sometimes if we didn't empty for 3 days we would just add a bit extra nappy san.Cheap as and a great result.
