Hi, we are a family of 6 (kids 9, 7, 6, 3) are will be caravanning around the East half of Australia for 3 months from around July this year. We are looking at the Jayco Expanda caravan model 21.64-1. Would love to pick one up pre-loved or even hire one because I don't think we will be keeping it after our trip. We have a Landcruiser Sahara so we have the towing capacity. We liked the 21 foot model because of the separation between parents and kids and the second table configuration to separate children while doing school work. We have never owned a van before so open to all advice and tips.

Welcome to the forum @k4kazza
I'm guessing 3 months would be a bit expensive to hire one?
If it was me my option would be to get a good second hand one and resell when the trip is completed. You'd be surprised how they hold their value!

The kids will love a trip like that!

Hi there and welcome. There is a 20 in the for sale section at the moment that is a bargain. If you could make that work and maybe get a bed converter for the dining table, you would be on a winner! It's brotys in the 4 sale section. It's really worth a look.

Welcome @k4kazza. Could be a bit of a struggle finding a 21 for hire, or even second hand for that matter.

We have the 21.64-1 Outback, and absolutely love it.

What year model is your Sahara? We are towing ours with a 2002 100 Series Turbo diesel, and its not exactly economical (averaged 23 l/100km on a trip over Christmas) but you are towing something akin to a small moon, so should not be too surprised, but it will need to be factored into your travel budget. We used 977 litres of diesel over 4900km.

Thanks for your feedback. I also think we may be out of luck getting a second hand or hire 21 ft. The 20ft one from brotys has sold. We have a new Sahara (2014 model) and we are guessing it won't be an economical holiday. But it will all about showing the kids Australia and teaching them things they can't learn in the classroom.

So you're not looking to hire out your van @Bellbirdweb ?
