Table Modification

We have a dinette style layout in our expanda and thinking of removing the table and replacing with a 600mm round table on a curved leg (forget the name) so that it can be rotated out of the way. My question to you knowledgable pandas is this - is this type of leg stable enough? Am I better off with a straight pole and having the offset bracket?

@bigcol We're all up and about now, thanks for keeping the noise down (and thanks again for that GST :p)

@Kenty I had the offset bracket and it worked well for us. We're in our third Jayco and the tables always have a slight wobble no matter how tight you screw em up. Its like the posts are a wierd imported size, an annoying tiny bit smaller than the bracket.

It drove me nuts and i found a shim cut from a plastic 2 litre milk cartoon (remove the milk first) makes for a perfect stable table (that rhymes) by putting the plastic shim in the bracket and then inserting the post

Hi Kenty.
One of the best mods I made in our 16.49-2 was to move the round base of the original table to one side and put a smaller table top on.
The bent leg meant the table could be:
1. swung right over the bed (good as a drink table as your legs fit underneath) - not shown in the picture
2. moved partially over the bed as a good side table in the evening when you want maximum couch space.
3. used as a dinner/breakfast table.
It worked very well and I miss the lounge space we had in the Expanda.
(Sorry I didn't iron the sheets or make the bed in the photos - I'm normally better than that here!)

Thanks for the info. So you used the existing holes in the floor where the original table was?

No. Just filled the old hole and drilled a new one. You could never tell really.
The table is secured effectively with one very long eye bolt. 10mm from memory. Just a bolt and washer underneath.
The tabletop I made myself. MDF with a chamfered edge and three coats of lacquer.

We only want the table to be a drinks table as we will more than likely eat outside. We are looking at this for the top - http://chairforce.com.au/product/victoria-round-table-top/. From your pics did you move the leg closer to the smaller lounge? It doesn't look as though you moved it far.
We eat outside mainly too. And yes - just moved the base a short distance as per the photo towards the lounge closest to the door. Probably drilled the new hole 20-30cm closer to the bed as well.

Ok thanks for that. So end result was good? How stable was the table just on the 1 leg? Although we are only having a 600mm diameter table.

Worked for us. Not like four legs but my (then) 6 year old could eat his weetbix and not have it spill everywhere. Not a bad test. (And Kenty.... I usually don't put things up here that haven't worked! - good luck with your decision).

Hi @Kenty.

Not sure if this is of interest but I went the other way and removed the standard table completely . It wobbled too much and never really worked for us.

I bought one of the 4 foot plastic moulded tables from officeworks. It folds in half and and has 4 adjustable legs. It stores vertically against the front boot inside the van so it's out of the way. With it out of the way it makes the dinette area more of a lounge area. We set it up in the dinette area for inside eating or can take it out if we want to eat under the awning. Works for us. Much more stable and flexible use.
