Has anybody driven/towed from Sydney to Adelaide via Hay? This looks to be the shortest route but is it good for towing? I am wanting to tow this route with my 18:57.6 later this year. Or is it better to go the longer way (dual carriageway) through Melbourne? Any expert advice is welcomed.

I haven't towed all the way to Adelaide but the only issue I had with the Hay plains was the head wind. Shocker for fuel consumption.

Yep...road is easy but, as said, winds can get up.

The area around Hay is quite interesting ...in places and a lot of flat sameness...good free camping on the river flat, if I remember correctly...

We have gone via Balranald which is a good overnight stop...that may not suit you if you want to save time but, personally, I hate the freeways and reckon they cause more stress, rather than less.....and generate more idiots.

The route via Melbourne has to be avoided for the same reason....and they seem to have lots of speed cameras everywhere ....it can get expensive!

I live in Adelaide and have done the trip a few times to Bathurst. It is the shortest route and is no real problem. There is nothing to see through the Hay Plain and the can be winds which will increase fuel consumption so plan your stops.

Agree with others - definitely best route and highly recommend Big4 Hay. Not a fancy Big4 although does have a small pool but very well kept grounds, friendly hosts and drive through sites. Not as much truck noise as the other site in Hay.
Also experienced the head wind driving towards Adelaide- has increased our consumption from around 18 to over 20.
Do you neee any info about Adelaide or SA?

Thank you so much for taking the time to give your advice. We will take this route and stop at either Hay or Balranald. Whilst in Adelaide we will focus on Victor Harbour, The Coorong and Kangaroo Island. We will finish our stay with a few nights in Adelaide Caravan Park before we head back to Sydney. if you have any info that may enhance our stay please feel free to advise.

Mmmmmm,......strongly suggest you look at the station caravan park stay right at cape Jervis....about three kms from the ferry to KI. If you don't want to take the van to KI they'll let you leave it there.

Not the flashiest place but we liked the area around there more than KI?

and easy to to get to Vic Harbour ....without the crowds.

Adelaide Shores Caravan Park is an fantastic place to stay, lots for kids to do but does get busy. If just the 2 of you then maybe not but if kids in tow then a good place.

Your offer of assistance is just amazing - what a nice thing to do. So, its my wife and two children making the trip so its always important for us to consider the facilities for the children. I will research the park you have mentioned.

Aspen Park is right in the city, no bad if the city is what you after but staying a bit further would be nicer. Driving around Adelaide is not as bad as some places...

You can not beat it with kids. My Daughter has 2 kids (6 & 8) and every year I setup my van for them to take a holiday there. Splash zone, pools and right on beach front. 15 minute drive into Adelaide. Not the cheapest place and does get busy but best place for kids I have found.

My choices would be either Adelaide Shores at West Beach or Adelaide Beachfront at semaphore, both close to the city and next to the beach and much nicer parks.

Have a look too, at Marion Caravan Park. Just south of the city, but only 10 minutes from the coast. Small park, great facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, water park, playground and jumping pillow. We live in the northern suburbs of Adelaide, but have taken our van here with our grandkids for the last three school hols, and are booked already for the April hols. The kids love it!

I will Google this and have a look. You make it sound enticing. Thank you for your suggestion.

Can I ask whether the road is single lane or dual? I imagine that this a a major truck route and I expect they will be driving faster than me.

It's single lane from the Hume through to Nuriootpa in the Barossa, most of it, until around Barmera, is long straight sections and the trucks will get around you, caravans are regulars on this road. From Barmera down there are plenty of overtaking opportunities with additional lanes.

It is a good drive, relax and enjoy the ever changing scenery, you'll enjoy it
