Hi all,

I am just wondering if anyone has had anything stolen while they are free camping? What do you do now to prevent it happening again?

I am writing an article for Caravan and Motorhomes on Tour magazine and need some help as I have been lucky so far and have never been affected by another thoughtless human being while free camping.

Thanks is advance!

Do a search on the forum, l'm pretty sure there is thread which has alot of this type of content. Speaking from experience, we've been lucky and all has been good, nothing taken. We don't take any real measure for security, though keeping the site clean and neat is one thing that i do like to do so if should something be taken, it is easily noticeable. Plus our neighbours all ways look out for each other gear. We do caravan parks mainly, also.

Hi Pace, I did a search and found some posts but they were all caravan park related. I need free camping related for my article. Good to hear you have been lucky like me.

In most cases good free camping spots are frequented by serious caravanners and reasonably safe.
If on our own, usually skip spots that are littered with cans and bottles. Weber is always chained to van or packed in front hatch.
More issues with CP's in my experience...you're less likely to know if people shouldn't be there, or react to odd noises.
Introduce yourself to others free camping at any site. Vanner usually look out for each other.
More premeditated thefts (sometimes I suspect by "? permanents" or the local villains.

A friend was just telling me on the weekend his friends van was stolen from his house while they were asleep , apparently they went to his house during the day and cut his chains and locks , which was bolted into concrete. (He lives on acres in the hills) they then went back during the middle of the night and just rolled it straight out.

I've heard a story or possibly a myth that whilst people were sleeping in there van at a road side stop a car drove in under there awning against the door which stopped them getting out whilst someone smashed a window in there car and stole what ever was in there (can't remember what they stole) then hopped back in the car and drive off leaving the owners dumb founded by what just happened???

Thanks Bushman, though it seems nasty to say thanks for others misfortune.
