Heard today that SAPOL and department of transport are cracking down on caravans. In particular they are looking at weights. I have heard that if you are overweight in any way, they are making people leave the caravans where they are.

while I do not want this to turn not a worry thread or a session on individual perspectives of the law, there are som things to remember if travelling through SA:

Additions or modifications that add weight must come out of your equipment you can pack, ie the difference between the Tare weight and GVM.

your tow capacity of your car may be in the fine print. Ie my ranger has a tow capacity of 3350kg, the GCM, gross combination mass, is 6350kg. That means if I tow the full limit then the car cannot weigh more than 3000kg, my car, with mods weighs in at 2800kg, leaving only 200kg of gear. In reality that reduces my tow capacity to around 2500kg by the time we pack other gear.

Again, this is just a warning for everyone travelling, be horrible for a fellow Expandas member to cop a fine or be parked up and spoil an otherwise great holiday.

Cheers

Cracka

Yeah us Mexicans had this blitz a couple of summers ago, same thing re tow ball weights per OEM spec of your vehicle. A good thing really and to see the authorities acting on it is encouraging to put the awareness out there.

In passing while we've been on a trip I had a driver admit to me they were so overloaded that for the 4 hrs they were travelling till they got to their destination the comment was ''what's going to happen, who's going to stop us, its only 4 hrs its on the road for really''.

Its drivers like this that make me quadruple my distance from them. Pace.
