For my Birthday in June, I brought myself an ASUS Transformer Tablet
reasons being -
1) more flexible than a Laptop for transportation
2) smaller and easier to use than a Laptop
3) Load mapping and camping Software

pretty much mainly them.....

anyhow, so I get this you beaut, flash as a rat with a Gold Tooth, fancy pants ASUS Transformer.
my wife has one (Pink) so I thought any colour will be ok, and it seems like an awesome bit of kit
does everything EXCEPT open bottles...........

so Im playing with it when I was away at Xmas Creek,
"why the F^%#& will it not open Google Play Store, so I can get some Apps............??"
"what do you mean, unknown Android System..........??"
"what do you mean, find correct Android Running System....... huh.gif"

soooo, after much swearing and cursing, the penny dropped
ahh, its running Windows 8

OH FER F00KS SAKE............ shittingmongralbastardspasticaresolewankerofathing

so, yesterday, my Darling wife presented me with a new 10' Tablet - than runs ANDROID

so Im on the hunt for the easiest Mapping programs to get....

all sound good, and do what they say, but what would be the easiest for someone like me to use
(remember, I got Win8 instead of Android to start with........)

any and all suggestions (apart from "suck #hit looser....") are needed

cheers

one of the "free" apps I wanted, was shown to me when we were at Toodyay - Wikicamps Australia
same same as Camps Australia 6 (I think) so it was / is on the list of Apps to get

what other interesting Apps do you guys have?

Mate wikicamps works a bit different and needs an internet connection to work. Where as camps app downloads to your device and is accessesable anytime.

Offroad mapping I have run mud maps but would run hema nowdays.

Good luck, my boy loves win8 and thinks us OS and android users are all nuts lol

I like the sound of that @achjimmy

I think win 8 suxs balls, on a Tablet (not used it on a real PC yet) because it wont let you do what you want to do -
ie: get into the setup and change what loads when turned on,
get rid of that God awful "trendy hipster" bloody home page - I just want a desk top with little icons of what I want

but its aimed at the 12-25yr olds, not people who want to write their own programs (I used to - until Win7......) :(

Wikicamps: Has ability to download a generic Australia map for offline usage. About 140mb from memory. Can download for offline usage info on various camp sites on a State by State basis so you only get the info on the ones you need to cover your trip. Info is the various comments that people have posted and the thumbnail pictures for them as well. It all works quite fine without a 3G connection and just a WiFi one for the updates etc. You can take pictures with your device while at the site and just upload them when back on a WiFi connection. In my case I also have it on my Samsung Galaxy Note mobile so just need to be in mobile range to update if I want to do it that way. My pad is WiFi only.

Oziexplorer: I have it on both the Samsung Galaxy pad and on the mobile. For maps I did purchase the full Hema maps collection a couple of years ago but am now running the maps that can be obtained through the ExplorOz web site and I prefer those ones, especially with the enhancements that they are working on. Some time ago I also purchased the Camps6 POI file from Camps Australia Wide and imported them in to each device. The mobile in particular runs on the windscreen in Oziexplorer mode for travel, particularly going down the Stuart Hwy to/from Adelaide so I don't get lost.

Google Maps: Used in country towns for finding our way around if need be. You can download small map areas (6 from memory) for offline usage but the area that can be included does vary as it is data size limited not actual physical area. I think though with the later versions of Google Maps that some functions can only be done if you have activated a Google Account on both the device and a PC as some has to be done on the PC itself.

If I want navigation functions I use the Garmin dedicated device, so far.

Hema maps is currently $25 for both Android and iOS as a fathers day promotion. Finishes 14th Sept
I've downloaded it onto phone and found I could also have it on tablet for no extra charge (BTW @bigcol - an older Asus Transformer which does run android instead of win8 :))

Downloaded fine on phone:D - 11MB, then 2.5GB of maps to download afterwards....:o
Then did the lot on the tablet, flaked out and I had to do the whole download again.....>:(

Sweet @straydingo i wondered what I was getting for fathers day :)........ 2.5 gig of maps downloading now.
@bigcol some of the android map software i use are Androzic and OruxMaps, both of those work offline and you can use the older oziexplorer maps in them as well. My favourite though is OsmAnd+ it is an offline mapping app that uses Open street maps data, which can give great detail if you are into national parks etc. There is a free version and a paid version (about $6 i think) and while it does not "do it all" it is one I often use. The best thing about Open street maps is that if the area you are in is not already covered in detail you can add in the new data for all to use. On a recent trip to Kwiambal National Park there was not a lot of OSM data on the area so we added in some of the details. You can see here the data we added.
