Ross River outbreak SEQ

Can any locals advise if this is still a drama in SEQ?

Wife, 3year old son and I leave Tassie with the van in a 9 days for an extended trip to SEQ, but having heard this on the news, we were just wondering if the locals in that area can offer any updates?

It still happens. A friend of ours has it and thinks she picked it up in Cania Gorge but admits she had not applied repellant. We have been at Airlie and Mrs CR has been taken by sandflies and midgies but no mosquitos. If you use repellant and keep applying it if you are concerned you should have no problems.

Our xmas holiday in SEQ, got smashed by every conceivable natural patience testing event I thought possible ... accept the Ross River Fever. Blue Jellies, Stingers, Storms, Torrential rain, skin peeling wind, extreme heat, Sea lice .... and a few various combos of the above.

Cases of Ross river are a lot higher than we normally experience. You have to keep it in perspective though, here on the coast we might have expected to get cases in the dozens but have had over 100 in the first few months. With a population approaching 600000 here that means the mozzies have plenty of other targets to choose from. So take the right precautions when bushwalking or in areas that have high mosquito populations, use repellant and if necessary long clothing and you should be fine. Also the cooler weather has now arrived so this will reduce the mosquito population as well.
