Planning for next year's jaunt....
Thinking of taking the Mereenie Loop road round from Kings Canyon to Glen Helen Resort (late March/Early April). Is it suitable for the van - some guides say a very clear 'no', but I thought it had so much work done to it in the last few years it was ok.....?

We did it a few years back and wont do it again , ive been on some pretty bad roads / tracks but the M/loop road takes out first prize for being the worse ...

+1 from me too on the conditions on the Mereenie Loop.
We did a day trip from Alice out to Simpsons Gap and Palm Valley and then looped back around to Glen Helen.
There was a section of dirt road maybe 5k long that we hit just after a downpour.

Needless to say that it was diabolical and we both were continuously sliding the cars (unintentionally!!!)

At one point my mate lost it completely in his Patrol and went sideways off the road (we were doing maybe 30km/h max)

I wouldn't. The bitumen is longer but easier.

We completed it in July from Hermansberg back round to Kings creek station after doing the Finke gourge trip (awesome but without van) it was at night and it was hard yards with severe corrugations, wash outs and pot holes, not to mention the horses and camels. We had planned to pick up the van from Kings station and head back to Alice that way by after doing it in the very well equiped Patrol decided not a chance. if you have a Kimberly camper, Kedron or the like i would in day light and slowly but not a expanda, even the OB

considered it..................but not for very long.
I've been wanting to do that loop for years but looks like not this trip either (with the van at least)
