hi guys, we are planning a trip to around the healesville area in the dandenongs and are just wondering where the best places are to stay and what route you would take from adelaide as not keen on driving through melbourne. what are the roads like in the area for towing and how hilly is it as i have never been in that area. not necessary to stay at healesville but around that area. and what are some of the attractions within an hours radius from there. all suggestions appreciated.

I can see @cruza driver tapping out a reply now...seeing he comes from this lovely area....
Warburton is nice. Upper Yarra reservoir is nice.
There are a couple of caravan parks in Healesville. Both are fine.
Further out you have Yea and Eildon but going through the black spur is windy.

There is Healesville sanctuary, Mt Donna Buang, plenty of nick nack type shops, good bike tracks, nice wine to try etc etc

The Badger Creek big 4 near Healsville is supposed to be pretty good. Like Brad posted upper yarra is great but unpowered but cheap( until parks victoria put prices up). A nice one as we'll is Thorton caravan park. If you come straight down the highway turn off on the western ring road M80 and you will miss the city but depending on what time you'd be going through city it's a pretty easy run towing a van and straight forward right through to Healsville.

Here you go @bigbertha there is a bit to do around the area of Marysville. A great spot by the way the town really is starting to get back on its feet after the devastation of Black Saturday. Depending which way you go but if coming through Healesville you will drive up and over the Black Spur which is a winding mountain sealed road that is tall timber country.

When in Marysville the bakery is a must too ;). Out of Maysville is Kepples Hut which I haven't been to for years (although I was meant to go there yesterday >:() that I would recommend.

There is also the Rubicon Hydro Electric scheme in the same area which is not to well known about in the area along with an old trestle bridge that was part of the scheme.

A trip over to Lake Eildon is well worth the effort too

Across to Warburton is Mt Donna Buang with views on a clear day stretching from Melbourne to the High Country, I took @Moto Moto there when he was last in town. From Maysville you take the Acheron Way that is unsealed and a windy in sections. The township nearest there is Warburton that @Brad heads to for weekend escapes. There is a whole other trip over there 8-)

At the turn off leading up there a rain forest walk can be had to stretch your legs .

How long you there for :D? A drive up the mountain from Maysville towards Lake Mountain will show a portion the extent of the and the intensity of the Black Saturday fires too.

If you can do Puffing Billy then pack a picnic lunch and go from Belgrave to lakeside in Emerald.

No problem at all @bigbertha. As for snow Lake Mountain up the road from Marysville would be your best bet there is a toboggan run and cross country skiing (no lifts etc) But if cold enough there maybe some nice snow play along the roads up there.

At Healesville there is Healesville Sanctuary a zoo affiliated with Melbourne and Werribee Zoo's. Its not the scale of Melbourne Zoo but is in the area your travelling through. They do a good birds of prey show there too.

The puffing Billy sounds good to that's something I haven't done for a number of years. :violin:
If your into history Woods Point is a small High Country town dating back to the 1860's, its a winding dirt road from Marysville which passes the entry point to Lake Mountain.

Anything else mate I'll see if I can help you out.

We stayed at Marysville caravan park and found it to be a very nice place. It has a beautiful creek running through it.It can get very cold at night. One thing to take note of .If you are going to have your annex up and some one sleeping in annex be prepared to get wet in mornings as you get a lot of moisture inside annex and as soon as sun comes up it starts to drip inside off annex roof.If your going to stevensons falls,go during the day and also visit at night. They have big flood lights on the water falls which can make for a great photo.Hope this may have helped you.The caravan is within walking distance to the shops.
