Onroad vs OB

We are hoping to join the expanda family asap. We are looking at buying a new 16.49-4 once we have sold our 2010 flamingo st. Our tow car is a falcon wagon which we intend on keeping for some years to come. Our next car will be either a 4WD or an AWD. We are undecided weather an onroad or an OB would be better for us because of the tow ball height and how a falcon would handle an OB. I have spoken to our jayco dealer but he hasn't got much advice for us on falcons towing OB's. Have even considered when the change of vehicle comes a change of height to an onroad model? Was wondering if anyone has any thoughts or advice?

AdJo, Hi and welcome to the forum, i think the weight of the OB will be too much for the Falcon, having said that you haven't given exact details of your vehicle,

Yes agree, you can in the future underslag the axle and get more height from your van if it is clearance and clearance you seek. Though your future intensions of 4WD/ AWD, are they terrian driving, then perhaps do the whole change now, update the vehicle and go the OB.

Food for thought, Cheers Pace.

Like Pace says, if you go for the touring model and find you need more clearance later you can get the axle underslung. I also relocated the spare wheel so its no longer sitting below the draw bar. Both reasonably cheap and easy after purchase mods.

Clearance and clearance only is what we're after. We are on road tourers but like the idea of bush camping say on the Murray or next to a beach where 2WD becomes a bit hairy if it rains, there is the odd obstacle or small rut. I was also wondering if anybody else tows an on road expanda with a family 2WD and how it handles?

I just checked the specss on a falcon and the towing capacity is 2300kg...... I think you will be pretty close to your limit with an outback and you van full of stuff.

I tow an on road 16 expanda with a Pajero and found the combination great. I have not found to many dirt roads that bother us. If you are considering an AWD then you won't be driving on any really hairy tracks anyway. By the way we picked the on road so it would fit under our standard roller door without the need to use storage wheels or letting the tyres down. As others have said you can lift on road height later if needed, but if you are not planning many off road trips go the on road model. We are taking ours camping alone the Murray in two weeks.

I tow a 16.49 1B with and SV6 Sportswagon and I have no problems at all. Mine has an underslung axle which brings the ball height up higher but with the Hayman Reese WDH the ball height is easily adjustable to balance things up. If you go with the onroad version you will have very similar weight specs to what I am dealing with however with the OB there is about 200 extra kilos that I can't vouch for.

Thank you very much everybody. I think by the sounds of it the on road is the one for us. If I have any other questions pop up I will post them as I am enjoying reading and participating in this forum - also as we do get closer my excitement will need to be shared with people who are not sick of me going on about expands.
