Technically yes, but really if connected properly NO as I have done it for many years and no great dramas, they musy be the same size and type though, what you do need to do is put both batteries on abench charger before hooking them together and the connection of 2 batteries should be done correctly or you are wasting your time... have a look at this link it answers all the questions.... if your current battery has a number of wires hanging off it when you set up the 2 batteries you must only use one terminal on each battery the terminals connecting the 2 batteries should only have the cable to join them together. Ideally your battery cables should run to a Buss Bar or large fuse terminal where all the draws should be connected leaving a maxi fuse or breaker on the Neg & Pos feeds from the batteries, that way the batteries are protected from damage and you have control over the distribution...,... multiple connections to batteries in a van is not a good thing if something decides to fizz.....
