Just had a look at our 2006 Xtrail and it says 2000kg with 200kg Ball weight so it would be OK with our 16:49:3 I know it has more than enough get up and go as I have had to tow one of my big work trailers with about a tonne on it, Probably doesn't help you much though as it's the older model.

I towed a 1.2t boat behind my petrol 2008 xtrail and I remember thinking I really wouldn't wanna town something much heavier. It towed it but you could certainly feel the boat behind the car. I don't know if the later models tow better etc. but I dunno if I would be game to pull a 2t van behind one.

Cheers

Big no no if you ask me.... Lets face it,,, xtrails rav4 etc are there for young families and for that job they are awesome and I advise one of those over a sedan any time of the week.... But for towing big caravans??? Come on now...

It often amazes me how many people tow medium to large vans with x-trails, don't get me wrong I think they're a great vehicle
but why punish yourself not to mention the vehicle,

I had an 99 R50 Pathfinder previously, it's a 3.3 ltre V6 it was also rated at 2000kg and 200kg ball, my camper at the time (Swan Outback) rocked if at a hefty 1650kg and while the Pathie handle it OK, I too keep thinking I would not like to have 2 ton on the back, it it certainly would have been illegal with my Panda on back as it rocks in over 2 ton.

It's often said, that even the heaviest tow vehicle prefers to tow the lightest possible load.

We looked at getting an xtrail. Took it for a test drive etc and all seemed fine.
BUT...there was someting written in the manual about tow limits that turned us off. I can't recall the exact figures, but I think that the 2t towing only applies when there is no extra weight in the xtrail.

Yep you would be correct in that, heard that it also applies to Pathfinder and maybe Patrol, they have what they call a "sliding load scale" but they don't really make you aware of it unless you read the manual. Basically means the more weight in car the less on the rear and vise versa so if you go to your max tow weight it really only allows for very little in the tug.

It also applies to many ute's and this is where many people come unstuck with utes especially

I have had 2 X-Trails in the past and used one for towing my 830kg tare Finch O/b up to Qld a couple of times and down from Canberra to the Sth Coast many times. It was only OK I'd have to say - sunk a long way at the back (I did no suspension mods) and I always felt uneasy with it as a tow vehicle. At the time I only had a budget of about $25k and I appreciate the difficulty in finding a fairly new and safe SUV that can also tow in that price range. Fuel consumption in a petrol manual was ordinary too - about 16l/100klm. There's no way I'd try and tow my Expanda with it, or go anywhere near 200kg ball weight from my experience with them.

BTW, the Freelander 2 diesel I now have has the sliding scale in reverse - ball weight of 150kg but manual says that limit increases to 250kg (so long as you're not within 100kg of the max vehicle load mass inside the car). Thats a much better way to present it so people don't try and overdo it.

One of the primary reasons for getting rid of our Pathie, and why I won't buy one again if needing to tow - we were legally overloaded to tow the expanda (even with the 3000/300kg limits)

Xtrail:
Nissan says:
Towball download.......reduced vehicle mass
50kg..............................nil
100kg............................GVM less 60kg
150kg............................GVM less 150kg
200kg............................GVM less 250kg

GVM of all XTrails = 2000kg
ST 2.0 manual
TARE weight = 1403kg
load capacity= 597kg

Of the load capacity, take out;
65 litres petrol @ 0.711kg/litre = 46kg
take out 1 driver and 1 passenger = 140kg
leaves 411kg load capacity
Therefore vehicle weight = 1589 kg (no other luggage, persons, fluids or even a pair of sunglasses)

TL 2.0 turbo diesel manual (top of the range)
TARE weight = 1658kg
load capacity: 492kg

Of the load capacity, take out 65 litres diesel @ 0.874kg/litre = 59kg
take out 1 driver and 1 passenger = 140kg
leaves 293kg
Therefore vehicle weight = 1854kg (still no other luggage, persons, fluids or a pair of sunglasses)

The ST is still 411kg below GVM at this point and can tow with the full 250kg on the tow ball.
The TL is only 146kg below GVM and can only tow with 100kg on the tow ball.
