Howdy all, I am wondering what to do! Currently I have a 3.0l Turbo diesel 2008 Nissan Patrol, and I am now towing a 17:56 1. When I tow its sucking heaps of juice to get where I wanna go (used half a tank, 75 Litres of fuel getting under 300km). I have had the Pootrol chipped and had the exhaust done to a 3 inch diameter, which people had recommended, but hasn't help except for performance when not towing. So now I am at a point where I need to look at other options so it doesn't cost me a fortune to tow the van. Do I look at diesel gas for the Pootrol to hopefully bolster the power and lessen the fuel bill, or should I look to upgrade the vehicle? A twin cab 4x4 ute would be handy, but I do have a dream of cutting the back off the Pootrol and twin cabbing, so what do I do, recommendations anybody? Thanks in advance.

never driven a patrol ....... pulled a few out of the muck tho ..... :biggrin-26:

Mate I know nothing about patrols but I would think being the diesel it should do a lot better than that. Father in law has 2008 3l diesel prado getting 15-17 L/100 towing his 17 foot discovery. His van is the one on the left in the pic of the forum header.

Why do both Prados have the bonnets up?

Why do both Prados have the bonnets up?

we were travelling in the middle of december one week out from christmas through 40+ degree heat. So each day when we pulled up, we just lifted the bonnets to give them a bit of a better breather! :smow:
In saying that, neither Prado skipped a beat on that trip! Sad that both old girls have gone to their new homes as they were both petrols and we just needed diesels.

Maybe they both just jump started a pair of Jeeps :drum:

:phone: yeah CD it saved those jeep drivers from having the call for help... hahaha

depending on where you are - Victoria I see, maybe a GOOD Diesel Tuner will help you

have you had a look at either of the 2 national Nissan Patrol Forums?
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/forum.php
or
http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/

first one is real good - and great guys, second one I've not been on much lately (Expandasdownunder.com keeps me busy enough)

first thing you need is "NADS" - if you search it you will find it on both forums as you have the 3.0L
maybe need a bigger turbo, different pump, new injectors etc........ a good Tuner will help you and find a solution for you

if you dont have the Gas already fitted - its not worth getting it - (mine has it already, so I dont have the massive $$$s to spend to get it fitted) it is "sort of" worth it - but only because it is already fitted - (mine is a 4.2Turbo Intercooled)

hopefully they will help you

cheers

G'day Ben we have exactly the same combination. Our nissan is an auto 3.0 DI and our 17.56.1 is an Outback. Before this I had a 4.5 petrol auto, it was a gas guzzler so we went for the diesel to get better range. The funny thing was when I towed the camper trailer with the old patrol the auto was the weak link. So the first upgrade we did was the valve body and lock up for the auto. We had the roo systems chip and 3" exhaust installed this week and specifically asked for the maximum torque at about 85-95 kph so we could keep highway speed on the hills. This weekend we went to Porepunkah with a mate towing his 16.49.1 with a Pajero and had no trouble cruising at the speed limit, he did pull away on some long climbs but you have to keep in mind that we weigh about a ton more! The real eye opener was on the freeway on the way back when we were cruising at 110 kph. A big difference! For the weekend we averaged about 19l/100 with some pretty big climbs and high speed. I'm guessing we will do better on more sedate highway drives. It's still too early to tell how the chip will work around town. Is yours an auto? If it is then you may be losing all the advantage gained through torque converter slippage.

Ben I have a 2002 DI patrol manual, did a trip to Tassie towing a Supreme Aero 17'6 full size van weighing 2400ATM, the patrol has a Beaudesert Exhaust fitted 2.75 inch and a Dtronic Chip fitted, I averaged 15.3 LPH overall, some hilly country was out to 19LPH and others were down around 12LPH on the flat country(no head wind)
Common Rail Patrols IMO are more sensitive to tuning, I would get that checked before doing anything else.
Cheers

Hey @Dandy is your mate Pajero Silver? Was he towing last night I may have spotted him :spy:

G'day @cruza driver sorry mate, his Pajero is white. We were traveling together for most of our trip up through Yea on Friday and back to Melbourne via the Hume yesterday. I'm trying to get my mate onto the forum. Showed him a few of the mods on the iPad. I think he's hooked. In the Porepunkah Big 4 there were at least 6 Expandas! My wife accused me of stalking because I was trying to work out if I could recognize any forum members from the pics:eek-53:

My last Patrol was a 3L DI 2003 and I did 110,000 kms in her. Towed my 2.5t boat alot. Around town was 13 lph, hwy was 11 lph, towing the 2.5t boat was around 15-17lph.

I now drive a 4.8L petrol Patrol and don't ask about fuel economy lol. But its fun :)
