Planning to head out to Newnes Campground (NSW) on Thursday. The forecast is for rain. Never been out there before but know the last section is dirt.

What would that road be like in the wet with the van on the back?

Was at Newnes approx. 3 weeks ago, the dirt road you speak of is a solid dirt road, by that I mean it will easily handle traffic to include your van no probs...given its dirt, its a little rough/bumpy in spots, but nothing to be concerned with...it goes with out saying that you will have a lovely brown dirty spray on the van once you get to Newnes if its raining...other then that the road is fine....take your time heading don the escarpment into Newnes, as its a little narrow and a touch skinny in places...again nothing to be concerned about...just for your info...

Haven't been to Newnes for many years and not with any form of trailer in tow, is there anything to worry a full height van like over hanging rocks/cliffs etc or tight airpins unsuitable for long vans

Spot on. The road down to the valley is very steep and narrow in sections but it is black top so no worries. Just go very slow if dark or wet. Dirt section is very short these days and is flat and reletively wide. I dont think you will have an issue. There are a few campsites there. You wouldnt want to take the van across the river but you will be able to cross the small concrete wier to get to the large open free camping area at the end. My tips are to check out the ruins (about 2km from camp) and the glow worm tunnels (10km. Walk or drive back around through lithgow to get within about 2km)

Just got back today, Yes as @Roosterman said no issues in the wet, the dirt section is pretty solid and more of a sandy texture (not clay, so not slippery).

The decent on the tar section is fairly steep but not issues with big van. Just don't stop on the way out, might be hard to get going again.

Also when in the big camp area don't go for the nice flat spot near the river which does have an water easement above it. After a downpour it ain't so nice.
