Hi all,

I am looking at upgrading/changing the tow vehicle, and have 2 4x4 twin cabs in mind. The Ford Ranger XLT and the Toyota Hilux SR5, both Diesel, and not sure what transmission yet. I am wondering if there is anyone on here with either of these that could impart their experiences, such as Fuel Ecconomy when not towing and also when towing (also including size van), and the Pro's or Con's. Also if you have noticed in sag in the rear when towing your van and how you countered this.

Thanks Ben

Go the Ford, I think the SR5 will struggle with your van. Though the SR5 is a good unit, the Ranger will tow great and and is tough unit too. We recently went away and elderly couple had a 22ft full van towed with XLT 6spd 3.2 diesel, they got great economy and all the power to tow. Cheers Pace.

Plus the hilux is restricted with a much lower tow weight than the ford

@Ben Stanford go the Auto definitely, reverse and first in these utes are way to high for tight slow manoeuvres. And since free wheeling hubs are a thing of the past low range isn't an option unless on grass/loose gravel or dirt. On the sag side of things invest in a suspension kit, transforms the unladen ride no end and handles the towball weight with ease. I have an EFS kit on mine and with our van on (20.63) it drops 15mm so pretty happy with that.
