We bought an Expanda 16.49.3 OB in September 2013. We had been away for a total of about 10 weeks in it, had done a number of mods, thanks to everyone on this forum, including raising the bed bases and new mattresses (nice comfortable beds), but decided that while we loved the concept and space it gave, it just wasn’t for us. Originally we said we didn’t want a van where 1/3 of the space was taken up by a bed, but we changed our mind. We also would like a full ensuite.

We decided that while the van was in excellent condition we would look at selling. Advertised on this forum and other web sites, and apart from a couple of scam enquiries we got no genuine ones. Dropped the price but still no enquiries.

Whilst we were in Nowra we saw a van that we really liked, the layout etc was just what we wanted (although it had a 3 way drop table which were not really keen on). Went out to Jayco Canberra but they had nothing but Expandas on show. Saw three vans on the net in Albury which we liked so decided to go down and have a look (350k way so had an overnight stay). On the way down we decided that we would drop the price on our Expanda again by another $1000. Whist we were there we called into Jayco Albury and they had new Starcraft and Journey’s in their yard. We really liked the Journey 17.55.8 and they offered us the same price on the Expanda that we were thinking of dropping it down to as a trade, as well as very decent voucher for spending in their accessories shop, which is a decent size and has everything in it. We were there on the 30th June and the vouchers were valid if we signed that day.

Went round to look at the other vans and was told that one had been sold 3 weeks ago and the others were out on hire. Their web site says nothing about the vans being ex-hire and the prices they were asking were the same as new ones. Had a bit of a discussion with the salesman about web sites in today’s world.

Went back to Jayco for a second objective look and said yes this is what we wanted. The one in the yard had most things we wanted but we added ESC and a 120w solar panel. The voucher allowed us to buy extras that we wanted such as cover, side awning screen, Aussie traveller anti-flap bars and much more.

I tow with a Territory diesel and with the Expanda I needed the middle rated WDH as the tow ball weight was much greater that the Journey. On the way home from Albury I towed with no WDH, the front of the car was up 20m, the rear down 20m and the van 10m down at the rear. I am thinking of getting the axle underslung so will have to look at my setup then. I have never towed a tandem axle before and was happy how it went. As I had heard they are a not as responsive to turning at low speed.

We have only stayed one night in it, Holbrook on the way home. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to get away since then, but next weekend we are off to the south coast for a week.

Thanks to everyone for your support and comments.

As we bought the Journey from Jayco Albury is was fitted with a Breakaway system. During handover when they were explaining it to me I said that it wasn't a requirement in the ACT. Albury had arranged for a temporary rego permit to allow me to get the van back to the ACT. When I went to register it the next week I thought I would connect the Breakaway system up and plug the monitoring device in. Just as well as they checked that it was working correctly and said that IT is a requirement in the ACT if ATM over 2000kg. The Journey is just over 2100. I couldn't find anything on the ACT Government web site stating this.

Interestingly the Expanda 16.49.3 we had had a ATM of 2063kg and wasn't fitted with a Breakaway system We purchased it from Jayco Canberra with ACT rego.

@chartrock I like the idea of moving the battery under the lounge. Do you know if this can be done as a retro fit?
@Billrw136, Image 8 shows the bracket on the top of my shower door. Is this the same as yours. I have tried pulling, pushing etc on this one and it doesn't want to go anywhere. Accept that this is not the same as on road.

I have also put a box around the power outlet under the bed, thought this was vulnerable to being hit by sliding things.

The last photo shows the plumbing for the shower and vanity. On the Expanda the shower fed to its own outlet. This one doesn't so unless you are on completely flat ground I can see the water coming back up the shower when using the basin.

Bruce - image 8 is very interesting - this must be what Jayco is now doing - this vertical bracket does not exist on my van, only the horizontal one on top. Will double check when I go home for lunch.

Had our first time away in the new Journey last week, went to Eden on the far NSW south coast for 6 nights. Rained for 3 days but that was OK, opportune time to check seals in the van.

Good, no water leaks from the roof hatch, air conditioning etc.

Bad, the sail track on the roof for the awning is only sealed where it has been screwed, the rest just let the water come through, particularly over the door (naturally).

Not happy that on a rainy and windy night I found that the gas bottles had not been filled. This is despite both our sales person and the guy doing the handover saying that they were. Needless to say because of that I didn’t check. (Note to self, don’t rely on other people.)

Mostly we are very happy with the van’s layout and inclusions. Jury is out regards the “fake” curtains. I like the idea of being able to pull the curtains when just getting changed or sitting at the table and having light come in but a bit pf privacy.

I was very happy with how the van towed. From Canberra we went to Cooma, Nimmitabel, Bombala and then turned on to Imlay Road and joined the Pacific Highway just south of Eden. Good roads and an easy grade down the mountain range.
