My weber Q emptied my gas bottle

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to post this so no one else gets caught out. I have a baby Q with the high lid connected to a 4kg gas bottle. I think from the literature that came with the bbq it said I should get a significant number of cook-offs with this setup up but after about 10 bbq's my gas bottle was empty.

Been scratching my head as to how this happened and I found the reason today. I use the weber black cover that the shop threw in for free when I bought the bbq and I dont know if its the wrong one for the high lid or its one for all baby Q's but its a really nice snug fitting cover. Its so snug that it causes the gas knob on the bbq to be pushed in, as you do when you want to light the gas and unless you have the knob at exactly the Off position it causes the gas to leak out. My fault for not turning the gas off at the bottle as I usually do but when I have it connected to the expanda I usually leave the gas turned on always when camping. Must have taken a couple of days but I managed to empty the 4kg bottle as the gas knob must have moved from the off position as I was stretching the cover over the end of the bbq. I was just covering the bbq and luckily heard the gas was on.

Didnt want any of you running out of gas when out there so be careful of this, its really easy to do.

Adios,
Mike

Thanks Mike, hasn't happened yet, but a timely reminder to always turn off at the bottle.
I did run out of gas though, I was getting so many meals out of the BabyQ and 4kg gas that I forgot to check the bottle. Delayed meal while I got out the spare 8kg bottle from the drawbar. Still need to modify those bottle carriers so bottles can be removed when front bed end is down!
Couple of ideas, just need to get off my backside.

Thanks for the tip, maybe if running your fridge on gas it would pay to get down on hands and knees and turn off valve for bayonet......a pain I know but safer I guess!

Dont have the cover for ours (should though) but as ours runs from the Bayonet on the van, I've never trusted just turning off the Q, so I reach under the side and turn off the tap at the Bayonet.
