Gday, it depends on what you want to hunt for.

I have a Fisher f75 wich is great for jewellery and relics, on the beach etc. Its also reasonable on gold nuggets as you can ground balance it. Our ground in a lot of parts is mineralised so it sends the detector crazy unless you can balance the unit to changing ground conditions.

If you are strictly after gold nothing beats a minelab gpx 5000, but they are $5000+

We are very happy with our Minelab Xterra 705 we have the gold coil for it but havent had the opportunity to look for gold yet but the treasure hunting for coins etc in the caravans and on the beach side of it has been good fun

any one have a metal detector?? Thinking of getting one?? important features etc !!!

Have a chat and they'll probably let you have a play. Whites and Minelab are very popular. Apart from price, consider the weight and balance of the detector. They all seem to weigh much more after an hour of prospecting.

thanks thats about 15 min up the road doing a bit of research at moment fosicking sounds good I just want to play with it keep the kids interested in finding things coins jwellery etc and not spend a fortune in the process it has to be light weight and portable to take with the panda
