Try Hobson's Bay CP (not much on offer within the web to see, perhaps call them up for your accomodation type), location is near the water with a few boat ramps available in Altona, Wlliamstown. Not more than 10mins from CBD, lost of restuarants to select from with most dining types on offer in nearby Williamstown. Pace.

Thanks all for the advice....

Thinking of two options, essentially will have the boat with me so wanting to do some fishing but also want to be close to the city so we can go out for dinner / exploring / markets etc here is my two options.

1) Stay close to the city and the trailer the boat down to mornington peninsula to fish the bay. Its about an hour from the CBD to here so would probably do a couple of early morning trips out there fish half the morning then back to the van park to clean up and head into the city for the afternoon / evening.

2) Stay down at mornington peninsula, fish the mornings and then head into the city at lunch time for the afternoon and evening.

From what I can gather its about 1 hour from mornington to the city but kind of like being close to the city.

What would others do?

I live on the Mornington Peninsula as do a couple other forum members, Gadget Adam comes to mind. It is a pain driving into the city from the peninsula on a regular basis, after a couple times you will be sick of it. It will be ok to do a couple times. Plenty of places to stay in a van, I would think a foreshore park would be better, one at Rosebud is over the road from plenty of shops and the beach is pretty good. A lot of the caravan parks in the area are the ones that annuals stay at, so not really tourist parks. Further down the bay, Blairgowrie foreshore park looks nice and there is one near Sorrento that has a nice outlook. Good boat ramp at Sorrento and Rosebud. Heaps of wineries, a couple breweries as well if your into that and most of those places have restaurants. Old drive in at Dromana is good for a nights entertainment if your kids have never been to one. Plenty of eating places around. Ferry trip to Queenscliff is a good day then you have the other side of the bay, Flinders, Shoreham, Point Leo etc.

Cheers mate....

Lots of good reading material there will check out some of those places.

Is the drive in just because of traffic or long?

Looking for a good quality van park close to Melbourne CBD.

Anything good with kids and maybe even close to a boat ramp so I can take the boat out fishing.

Anyone have any good recommendations?

Cheers!
Hobsons Bay Park Williamstown is full of permanents, I would not stay there. The best tourist park is Big 4 Ashley Gardens in Braybrook and offpeak about a 30 minute drive to Altona or Newport boat ramps. About a 2 hour drive to Rosebud as well.

We stayed at Ashley Gardens about 1 year ago. Really nice park, great pool, lovely clean modern cabins and very close to the city. Would definitely stay there again. Funnily enough we went over to check out caravans :D

Thanks for that!!

We stayed there before but in a cabin, ill check out the newport boat ramps and may stay here then as its somewhat close to the CBD although I managed to get lost a few times on the way back lol!

How does Ashley compare to this one? -

Parks are similar and Coburg is further out of Melb. To get to Braybrook you can take the Western Ring rd which is now completed on that section. You can easily go west to fish Geelong and the Bellerine beach towns, Surf Coast and Great Ocean Rd.

I have stayed at Ashley Gardens a couple of times, nice park, have also stayed at Big4 Coburg, found Ashley Gardens easier to access the city and surrounds
