Hi all, Need some advice on places to see and stopovers. We are heading off in July from our home in Sydney to Longreach via Agnes Waters. Have planned our route to Agnes Waters from home. We are going to take about 2 to 3 weeks to get to Agnes Waters then on to Longreach. Leaving Agnes Waters we intend to follow the A1 hwy north towards Rocky then the A4 hwy through Emerald to Longreach. (We aren't going into Rocky as been there a few times already). Then return via the A2 hwy through Mitchell and Roma back to Brisbane before heading home. So if anyone has ideas for the places to see or recommend over night stays will be gladly received. rgds Stewart

What style of camping do you like!

That'll affect recommendations....if you like Big4 parks with jumping castles etc or if you prefer the quieter less gung ho parks....or free camping......or a mix of all.

My personal recommendations for a quiet well run park with good fishing (for those who actually catch fish) would be Red Rock (north of Coffs) or Evans Head (a bit further north). Both are run by North Coast Holiday parks and I was very impressed with them.

If you like national parks....bunjalung is good.

Further north......Inskip, Tewantin area, and 1770 rather than Agnes ....both are fine but cater for slightly different needs.

Around Rocky....Yeppon, Kinka Beach or similar.

That's enough for now, but it does depend on your requirements.....as you've probably guessed, if there's a jumping castle, we avoid it....but that's just us.

Forgot to add....use Wikicamps....it's generally reliable and shows multiple options.

Gem Fossicking at Rubyvale/Sapphire/Anakie near Emerald, great pie shop at Alpha, heaps of yabbies at Fairbain Dam near Emerald, the touristy stuff at Longreach while very interesting can become very expensive but then The Stockmans and QANTAS musuems are at least need to be done once, the cost to walk around and inside the aircraft are a bit much but the museum itself is great........interesting vehicles and displays at Illfracombe, we stayed there and commuted to Longreach, great pub and a mineral springs spa pool in town....WiKi Camps is the go.

Much appreciated with the feed back. My main reason to go to Longreach is go the Qantas museum. Since my post I have looked at Carnarvon NP and stay at Takarakka caravan park looking at a few days there before heading off to Longreach.

The Qantas museum at Longreach was an absolute highlight of my trip there in 2015. If you can afford it, do the private tour of the place (cost about $180 per person). They escort you everywhere including onto the wing, right up into the tail of the place and into the cockpit and also includes lunch. Book a few days ahead as it can be booked out. Another couple of must do's in Longreach is the Stockmans Hall of Fame (whole day needed) and Kineen & Co does river cruises/ night shows also worth watching. In town, we stayed at Longreach Tourist Park that is right near the Qantas Museum & Hall of Fame.

On your way there, there is a small place called Ilfracombe which has the machinery mile worth looking at and also the tree of knowledge at Barcaldine. It is absolutely brilliant out that way, you will enjoy it !!!!. Any questions about that area- let me know.

We stayed at Takarakka over New Year (bloody hot) and from there to Barcaldine. Stayed in a little quirky park there and did a couple of day trips to Longreach for the Qantas museum, including the full behind the scenes tour. Highly recommended.

We were disappointed with the Stockmans Hall of fame, no live displays in summer, might be better in Winter

If you want to see a better example of a lovely town in a great cattle and sheep area which reflects what Longreach strives to do, but does it better, try Muttaburra.

Longreach has become a real tourist Mecca with all the bells and whistles and I agree, the Hall of Fame is ok for a brief visit (unless you're a history and relic junkie) and the Qantas bit is really good. Winton used to be far better, imho, and we found the caravan parks in Longreach really crowded with entertainment laid on.

The river cruise is quite good as well...try sunset.

Like all of Longreach things are expensive.

We love Muttaburra for its laid back country charm.

We found Longreach good but expensive and very busy, the hall of fame I found quite boring except for the Flying Doctors part. The River cruise with Kidman Co was great too. We found Winton dinosaurs thing great.
