We do both.. Then before I go to bed I make sure at least a few layers are on them.. No idea how long they stay on them :) on cold nights kids get onesies on to make sure something covered.
Also have a few of those polar fleece style kids throw blankets with wiggles or what not on them. Sometimes they like them under them to keep warm.

So far mine just have a doona thrown over them and they lie on a fitted sheet. I do have sleeping bags in the van......just in case.
Remember, the more you take, the more you wash when you get home. Which is why we go minimal everything.

Only use sleeping bags plus a fitted sheet covering the mattress, but when cold, we only stay at camp grounds with power so also have electric under blanket and option of a fan heater.

shhhhh, don't tell anyone the secret and you'll get nearly empty campgrounds......diesel heater to keep warm. Onseies, winter sheets and the same doona all year. Our kids are blanket kickers and the heater keeps us all toasty.

We're not kids but made an important discovery (to us at least).

We've always believed in the recycle principal for camping. (You use what is beyond its use by date at home) so our doonas in the van were old and worn very well but sufficient up till now.

They were old and well used in a warmer climate and totally useless in colder weather so we're now going to have to replace them with a better model which actually retains some warmth. Sometimes the recycle principal comes back to bite you so I'll mend my ways and actually prepare a bit better and stay warmer.

They're still good as under blankets to mask the bed join.

I'm inclined to go for a high density acrylic rather than a down fill as that's easier to wash but wonder now what others use ...for greatest warmth factor and ease of use. We use a down one at home and are never cold.

No diesel heater!

I'm the Same. Used the old doonas from home in the van, but just the other day bought a new (warmth rating 3..... Very warm) one, as I found child #2 took our queen one and left us with the double one in a queen cover, not nice.
I only go the ones that can be washed in the machine....just in case someone gets sick. I also have some nice nice fluffy blankets that fold up small, just in case.
