Do any of you have Kayaks? Matt and the our 8 year old have just bought themselves a fishing kayak each. When you are camping, where do you store them? Do you lock them to your draw bar? An hints or tips for them when they christen them on the weekend? Where are your favourite place to Kayak?

I just bought an inflatable double kayak for the partner and I to fish out off up on the tweed river.

If we like it enough we are going to get a solid one and give the inflatable to the kids.

Chartrock has them he will surely pop in and explain how he gets along with them!

G'day Andrea,
I have a sit-in White Water Kayak that I use to play in both the rivers and surf the waves while at the beach. When it comes to locking it up I usually put the boat inside the expander while out and about but at nights I place a cable lock onto one of the rescue points closest to the cockpit and secure it underneath the van to the chasis so any fancy finger type persons don''t get any ideas. but also when securing it I cover the equipment as well keeping it behind the draught skirt which sort of has the ''out of sight out of mind'' ideology behind it to reduce temptation.

To christen them I say take them for a long paddle and enjoy either the ocean or the lake but also practice a bit of water safety when it comes to falling out/off the boat and recovery techniques just in case the your fellows get into a spot of bother(Touch wood they don''t) That would be my biggest ''must do'' thing for the boats.

Other than that enjoy them and the van and the family time together. one thing I did notice is that you don''t have a boat either.....???? maybe you should join the boys???

Thanks expanda

Thirstyviv, we also have a quickpak k5 that I'll use with the two year old. Not interested in fishing though. Lucky it's an inflatable as I don't think we'd fit another on the roofracks. We have lockable tie down straps so will use them to lock it to the van. Won't be able to put the big one inside though.

We are taking the kids kayak to the neighbours pool tomorrow so he can practice falling off and getting back on :) he's a reasonable swimmer and we all have pfd too. We're going to the lake this weekend so there shouldn't be any currents to deal with.

Hope this makes sense... On the iPhone...

G'day Andrea. We had 2 'sit in' kayaks which we hardly used as it was difficult to get the two of them up on top of the tug so they were sold and we bought a double 'sit on' which is easier to load though heavier than the individual sit ins. It is not set up for fishing but I have plans to fit a rod holder to it and there is space for fishing gear. We have had it in quite often and taken it with us on our last trip and are very happy with it.

We have a very long chain I use for my solar panels and I loop this through the handles of the kayak when it is out of the water.

Sorry no close ups of the kayak in the water but we use it on a lake at Oxenford just beside the Coomera River. Very calm and no further than about 50 metres from a shore, would be happy to meet up for a paddle at some stage.

Ill be at the tweed / currubmbin with the inflatable yak late december just look for the bright orange floating log :)!!!

Ohhh and the mad man with crab pots strapped to the front.....

In fact I am actually yet to figure out a plan on wrestling a mud crab from an inflatable yak and the boss of the kayak is bringing a video camera for historical purposes!

Andrea, the main thing is make sure you have the right safety gear. If they are paddle kayaks, make sure you have paddles leashed to the kayaks incase of a dropped paddle. If you have an old mobile phone, can be handy just keep it in glad sandwhich bags. Rod holders are a must if you are fishing, even to store your rod whilst paddling. If you find hubby really likes kayak fishing, go to a Hobie test day and try a pedal yak. It is a fun way to fish because using a rod and paddle at the same time is tricky. I would run a chain thru the scupper hole and lock to something solid if you are in a caravan park. What kayaks did you get? It can be additive.

Expanda that will be interesting I hope you inflatable has multiple bladder!

Hi Geoff, we have paddle leashes, tow rope in case the boy gets tired( unlikely but precautionary), rod holders on both, seats, dry bag. They are a mantra palani and spirit hot shot (mine is the inflatable quickpak k5 - sevlyor??). We all have pfd's and the two year olds is the one that flips them on to their back. Are we missing anything?? We will run the rope through the scupper hole as you recommended though the spirit doesn't have any. We might be able to Wrap it with the other kayak though. Matt is already addicted. Spent 2.5 hours on the river today ( we are only a few hundred meters to a boat ramp). I can see a lot of time being spent ON the water this summer.

Two forums I can think of which could be helpful, google vyak and akff. If he is on water at dusk or later, lights are a must. You know he is addicted when he adds a fish finder and battery. Keep caught fish in the kayak and not tethered on the side (shark bait). A pole and flag is also good.

We Had our first successful expanda and kayak weekend at lake dyer. The boys went fishing and caught 4 bass each this morning. The paddle late Friday afternoon was lovely, we got rained on in a big way yesterday then this morning the boys went fishing while I took the two year old for a 90 min paddle. He's not particularly fond of the noise the speed boats make but loves the 'bumps' they make lol! All in all a good weekend was had :)

4 Bass, gotta be happy with that. Tell them well done. Careful of the boats, you can see them but sometimes they can't see kayaks.

Only got our kayaks in September and had a ball with them paddling around the Pumicestone passage/Bribie Island Caloundra. Kayaks are such a great addition to our camping experience with little upkeep makes them quite affordable for families. Well done to the fishermen.
