Hi all, it’s time to buy some Kayaks! I’m heading down to Cotton Tree for the week before school holidays and Hervey Bay for the first week of the school holidays. So plan to buy two whilst I’m at the sunny coast.

I'm looking for two decent all-rounder type kayaks to put on the roof racks (two racks on the roof of the dual cab only – no racks on the canopy) and take with us when on the road touring and then general use when back at home for a bit of recreation and fitness. I’m not looking for a fishing kayak atm (will add basic mods down the track if needed).

So with two young tackers - I’m going for single sit on tops kayaks so they can ride with mum and dad now, and as they get bigger they can take them out on their own.

Something that is good for having fun on lakes, rivers, dams and open/salt water - no big surf but something that can handle a bit little bit of chop and paddles well.

I also need to be able to load two on top of the dual cab myself - so size and length in particular are playing on my mind, aerodynamics as well – 20kgs each kayak is what I’m aiming for.

It’s been confusing given there is so much choice between models and manufacturers (and fast talking salesmen) – thus any one whose been there done – I’d appreciate your input.

I’ve been looking, and was sold, at the 2.7m x 0.8m wide Ozzie from Viking (http://www.vikingkayak.com.au/single-kayaks/ozzie) or 2.8m x 0.8m wide Pacer from OZ Paddle/Koastal Kayaks(Pacer XS in WA) (http://www.ozpaddle.com.au/product/ozpaddle-aussie-pacer/). I took my father in-law’s out a while ago and though it was ok – he said good on flat water but a little awkward in the wind and waves…

Then… Viking guys mentioned the longer yaks are slightly better to move and track, etc… 3.4m Nemo http://www.vikingkayak.com.au/single-kayaks/nemo. 3.4m x 0.8m wide – ok getting a little bit longer.

OZ Paddle kayak builder recommended going next size up with to 3.7m x 0.7m wide because it’s a better all-rounder (says it handles, tracks and paddles better/easier and it’s only 2kgs heavier and was personally not a fan of the smaller ones – but now I’m at 3.7m…
Given I’m a newby to Kayaking I want to get good bang for buck as I plan on getting good ones and keeping them for years .
  • Is the extra length a solid advantage worth going to?
  • Any one carted two kayaks around on the roof – is it a big issue?
  • Is a kayak trolley worth it or a waste of money?
  • Any other brands of this size kayak worth looking at?
  • Anything else I need to look at?
Cheers, Ligedy

My wife has (and I use) a Hobie Outback. Its a great Stable Kayak that has either pedal propulsion or the regular paddle or if your are really keen both. We have the large size which take 150kg but they also come in a smaller size. THe big one is 35Kg so its a bit heavier than what you want but the smaller one should do the trick. They are at the top end in price range but you get what you pay for. I cant praise the mirage drive any higher its great you just sit back and pedal. They are also quite a wide Kayak and as such are very stable, wife has tried to roll it but couldn't. Check out the Hobie range they are a great kayak.

We've got a Viking 2+1 and a Nemo.
both is good condition with seats and other accessories if you're interested in some good condition used ones. Both in grey. They are about 3 years old - always stored undercover.
They have been really good for the kids whilst young, but now don't seem to be interested... not getting usd very often

We too are regulars at Cottontree - the main place they have been used..
cheers

If you want a really good kayak, don't wast any time, just go to a Hobie dealer, they always have test days most weekends. Check out the new 2015 range (much better seats for next years model, but available soon, its a US thing. You can buy next years model this year). You get what you pay for with Hobies and if you sell, they hold their value. If you want an affordable starter brand, try wavedance, normally available from Rays.

Do yourself a favour, at least try a Hobie pedal kayak.

I bought 1 of these from ebay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Fishing-..._Sports_Watercraft&hash=item35d9e0e3d2&_uhb=1. I love the hatches and the grab handles. We also go to maroochydoor every year and will be taking these with us. I also bought the kayak holder from ebay. Works great love the kayak. For the young fella I bought a kayak from BCF. I can place both kayaks on the roof racks at the same time.

We have two of those and are happy with them considering we're new to kayaking and will only use them every now and then; if we were going to get right into it I think we would have gone for something higher in quality. Even though they're not heavy, they're still not so easy to carry because of the shape. We got ours for $339 when the seller had a sale, and they're local to us so we could pick them up, too. We haven't had any problems with ours so far, and I'm happy with them for the price we paid.
