Hi expanda,
I too am interested in a fishing kayak. I've done a little research, and I think when I invest in one, it would most likely be one of the Hobie Mirage kayaks. My reasoning is that with the pedal propulsion system that allows you to travel forward and backward, while you still have the ability to fish with both hands appears to be the way to go. I know that in Huskisson, near Jervis Bay, you can hire kayaks and try them out before you buy. It might be a way of sampling different kayaks before actually spending the hard earned stuff. The other bonus is that Huskisson is just a fabulous place, there are several great caravan parks right on the water, and the old Husky Pub has been done up, and looks amazing.
Oh and take your push bikes, as there are bicycle tracks that run along the waters edge, and the scenry is just fantastic.
Anyway, I hope this helps.
Cheers
Luis
Cheers for the info Huski is a beautiful place we visit regularly
.
We camp at this place -

Can be a bit of a tight squeeze with the van but well worth it if you can get in there!!!
And excellent fishing to!!!
Hi,
We have had the following
Hobie Mirage Outback x 1, Revolution x 1, Outfitter x 1 (2 person)
Why - we loved the family fun and fishing from them. We moved from the singles to the 2 person to save roof space, even with a Landrover it was tight getting to singles on. The room we gave up inside the singles was made up for by the fun of 2 people together. Normally myself and my son. If you plan anything more than 25 % of time going out by yourself I would steer clear of 2 person ones as it can be done 1 person but not nicely.
Rivers and lakes we loved the Hobie's ! I hope this helps and you enjoy whatever you do. We miss ours now
Cheers for that, the hobie mirage seems to be a very popular rig.....
It will be the wife and I 100% of the time as we ditch the tinnie this year for our pilgrimage up north to the tweed river and the like so I need a vessel to fish the tweed and hopefully wrestle some mud crabs!
Why did you give them up if you don't mind me asking?
Not enough room?
Yep, I'm into kayak fishing hence my user name Maccayak. Have a look on Vyak.net or Akff, just google and they will come up (kayak forums). You can't go past the Hobie's in my opinion. Main reason, you do not want to be paddling and fishing at the same time as you only have so many hands. Hobie's are foot driven by the mirage drive, gives you free hands to fish and steer. I agree with the comment above, make sure you really need a double one otherwise by a single. Hobie's are expensive, but they are like Expanda's, they hold their value.
One comment above mentioned going backwards, not to easy in a Hobie as you have to unclip the drive, reverse it then re install it, thats why you still get a paddle. Outback is a good overall model.
Hehehehe un-clipping the drive sounds like fun
I like the look of the hobbies but I think we are going to have to settle for a cheaper model.
We are on a bit of a health kick and want to use the paddles to help with upper body exercise as we already ride bikes for lower body.
And if we can chuck fishing into as well then even better
!!!
I have a couple of models we are looking at Ill put that down the bottom of this post
Hi Expanda,
I too am into kayak fishing. I started out with a paddle yak & quickly realized I wanted to be able to fish easier with hands free to fish.
I have had Hobie Outbacks for the last 3 years & now own a PA12. Great platform for the fishing I do, being able to stand up if I wish.
As others have said, you would be hard to beat the Hobie range of yaks.
Word of warning, once you have your yak & see others, it will be hard to resist to "pimp" up your yak with all the goodies that are out there to make your fishing adventure more pleasurable.
We are about to set off on Sunday for a 3 week traveling holiday, set around water ways I can fish:smile::smile
very understanding wife)
Best of luck with your choice, & remember, Safety First
Hehehe yes I haven't even got the yak I am already basing purchase of what I can do later to pimp it out!!
These hobie yaks seem like a very popular model!!!!
If you get a chance make sure you post up some pictures of your rig and things you catch
!!!!
We have a double kayak which I have used for fishing. It is not the easiest to use as there is no place to carry a rod but I plan to fit a rod holder to it, I have used it on my own but it is awkward because, sitting in the rear, the front lifts out of the water and acts like a sail pushing it all over the place.
We are off to Currawinya 2nd week of the holidays with another couple who have just bought a double hobie so I will be interested to see how they go. Actually, my mate gets seasick in the bath so I will be watching with anticipation. :bathbaby:
Hahahhahahahahahahahaha sea sick in the bath.......
What is he going to do in a kayak???
Is that why you got rid of the singles to get a double? Which model did you end up with?
I am would love a hobie but I the budget wont stretch that far.....

I have been looking at two models as follows -
1) Ebay No Name
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 108wt_1139
2) Desert Kayak - Tanami 4000
http://desertkayak.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Tanami-4000_Desert-Kayaks.jpg
I am leaning towards the Desert Kayak as it fits within budget but it is only 28cm's in total height where the Ebay job is 36cm's in total height.
I am worried that the 8cm extra height in the ebay job might provide a drier ride than the Desert Kayak model but just not sure if it is really worth worrying about 8cm or not?
The Desert Kayak has more storage than ebay one and is 10cm's longer and 10cm's wider so whilst i might get a little wetter due to the shorter height there is more room to move about.
I know we will be fishing the tweed river and currumbin river later in the year which is generally ok condition wise but outside of this at home we fish botany bay and central coast which is a bit less protected.
Thanks for all the posts its great to see I am not alone in this adventure!!!!
