Hello All,

We are a family of four with two boys aged 3.5 and 1.5 years. We have recently sold our Jayco swan to upgrade to an expanda. We are looking at a second hand 18,57-6 or 18,57-9, I'm am asking for opinions on which model would be best for us. I want a hardlid model as we'll, with full annex.
We will be towing the van with a 2012 diesel Prado.

Looking forward to your opinions.
Dave

We are now also looking at the 20,63-1, it would have to be the tourer not the ob as I don't think our Prado would tow the ob. Any recommendations on the 3 different vans.

We always liked the 57-6 though the dinette has less leg room than my 16

Just be aware the the 18 will be right on the Prado tow limit

Hi @Davrel sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the Prado can't legally tow any of the 20ft'ers :( which is a shame, we also like the 20ft'ers.

The tare weight is 2230kg for the onroad 20" and when you add the specified load weight (475kg) it exceeds the 2500kg towing capacity of the Prado. After the 20" onroad they just get heavier.

Our 2012 1857-6 OB is right on the limit of our Prado but tows it comfortably. We like the layout of the 1857-6 and wanted an OB. That ruled out the 1857-9, even if we had wanted it, the -9 OB was too heavy for our Prado. The 1857-9 OB has an ATM of 2635kg, the onroad will be ok with an ATM of 2470kg. Same issue with the 1857-5.

We didn't need the extra bed and wanted the back mounted bike racks and extra storage the 1857-6 offered, so we actually really wanted the 1857-6 but in reality the decision was made for us.

I look forward to the day the Prado has a 3t towing capacity. But the Prado tows the 1857-6 no problem at all.

hope that helps.

@Davrel I think you won't find too many used 20ftr's on the market as they are only fairly new. Have you considered a 17.56-2 or 1 as you have two kids??? The 18 would be a hefty van to tow with the Prado. I had a 150 D4D and it felt every kg of our 17.56-2OB.

Just went to the Jayco website and then downloaded the 2014 brochure to look at the floor plans of what you 'guys' are talking about but it seems the 18.57 only has one floor plan, -9.
Am I right in observing a significant reduction in the the number of variations of floor plans available in ALL models?
Seems like only 2 floor plans for most models.
The 14.4 now only has 2, previously 4-5 for example.

Yep like @Ren77 says -6 and I think also -5 are gone..... Maybe our -6's will be collectors items. I think removing the -6 is a mistake. Pretty sure you can only get onroad and OB -9 Models now. Shame really.... :(

Hi @Davrel, welcome mate. We also have the 18-57-6 OB, with 2 girls it suits us fine and like @Holden_man has said it's our limit also with the Pajero. We find it has enough room for us, any bigger means an upgrade for tow vehicle and that won't be happening for a long time if at all. The best thing about second hand is that all warranty issues should of been done so you can just enjoy it!
Good luck with your decision :)
