G'day Lizard, can't help you with Omeo as we just drove through it and stopped tonight in Bruthen just a few more K's down the Great Alpine Rd. It has a very neat caravan park at the showground, beautiful grass with large sites, clean amenities all for $22 a night. It's also pet friendly with great managers.

A great drive up to Mt Hotham with fabulous scenerey and also down the GAR.

Might bump this thread. Anyone driven the length recently and thoughts on getting the van up and over the top around the Easter period (late April I think this year...)?

Just picking out holiday spots and was wondering what our options were.

Mate looking at similar the week after, there's a thread in here where GreyNT towed over it so I don't think there's too many issues. I have always found towing in alpine regions just expect low average travel times and high fuel consumption

there was a bit about the run between Omeo and Bright on What's up DownUnder last Saturday, though they haven't added it to their site yet

G'day @Smergen yes mate we travelled that road in 2013 and found it not to bad. Some very tight bends and long hills to go up and down, like @achjimmy said just allow extra time. There are not a heap of places to pull over and let traffic past if you need to. Depending on where you are travelling, try to stop at the top of Mt Hotham for some photos. You might have cool nights at that time of year so keep that in mind as well. This is where my avatar photo was taken. Awesome views and even a little snow left over(cup weekend November), kids had fun throwing snow at their mother, oops no that was me... Unfortunately we missed the turn off for Dinner Plain but there is always next time. Was a very long drive from Inverloch but worth it in the end as we would have not gone to Hotham normally.
Any other questions, happy to help out.

Cheers
greynt

Thanks @greynt some great advice. I don't think we'll take it on this time around as we look to pick one holiday spot rather than two locales. But I reckon we will go for sure at some stage.

There is a nice camp site if you like bush camping and don't mind dirt roads not too far from Omeo.

Have not been there for a few years and would not recommend coming from the East via Jindabyne and Jacobs Ladder with a caravan, though possible it is dirt in parts plus a bit steep and narrow.

However the camp site is easily approached from the West and is very nice
