We went to the Grampians for a few days last week.
On a drive back at dusk to Halls Gap from Mt Zero, we had the misfortune to hit a small wallaby. It was still alive, but couldn't stand, so I picked it up and put it in a box with blanket over in the back of the car to try and get it some help. By now it had gotten dark and 10km down the road was a old chap just standing on the road. I pulled up and ask if he was ok. Apparently he he had just walked for an hour to the road and left his wife in the car down a side 'road' bogged.
I had only a snatch strap, but said I'd take a look, and off we went bouncing down (barely) a 4wd track.
Got to the car to find it was a late model Commodore, bellied out on sand, wheels buried. The very elderly lady driving explained she had no idea where they were, or really how they got there. But blamed the stupid modern car that she was stuck.
Unfortunately, I couldn't recover them safely. As they husband had already gotten on to RACV, I had to leave the car there for the moment.
Back up the road, I had a chat with the husband and pulled out a map to show him exactly where he was. From Irymple, but staying in Stawell, he had borrowed the car, followed his friend's directions, and didn't believe me, insisting he was 30km away elsewhere. It took ages to get out of him where they had come from, but I couldn't find out where they were trying to go. I was able to explain it to the RACV at least who could then get the right equipment in to recover them. Another 4WD turned up and also went down to take a look, but also weren't keen on trying to recover a Commodore without damage.....
The other guys were happy to stay with them so we left them to it went into town to the cop shop to let them know also and follow up to ensure they were recovered safely.
After all that.....they wallaby died. Wasn't happy.
Not sure why I'm posting this but I guess its therapy....
