Hi Everyone

We have recently purchased a expanda outback (2009). Very excited!!!

We would like to know what's the best generator to purchase.

We are going to be travelling around Australia with our two girls (2 yo and 12 week old!) we will be leaving Perth in about 4 months time.

Hopefully we will get to meet you along the way!

Take care
Margaret

Honda & Yamaha are the pick of the crop, especially if you want quiet, unfortunately also top of the price range as well.

I have a little 1kVa Honda which is great for charging batteries, and running small stuff.

I picked up an ebay special 5.5kVa which can run the AC and everything else, but is not really neighbour friendly from the noise point of view.

If you can exist without the aircon and everything else is 12v or gas then you don't need a generator. We can get 7 days just running lights, water pump and chargers on a 100aH battery. Haven't really tested the newer 120aH battery yet. Water capacity is our biggest problem.

Yep. Totally agree.

You can free camp for days without the need for a generator.

For extra water, try harvesting some of the light rain via a channel on the awning....it even picks up dew.

Welcome to the group, plenty of reading and laughs here.............Honda 2kva but do a bit of camping to see if you really need one first, be surprised how well a good battery and solar keeps you going.

Yeah i carry a gen and really it makes coffee two times a day. The poptops don't need air mostly unless you camp in silly spots in summer and the solar and 12v everything is pretty good. I am not even sure I'd bother with 2 batteries anymore? But if getting a gen id buy the YAMAHA 1st and Honda second, my 2c worth

$4750 for the 2.9kw inbuilt.

Looks nice but still noisy and crazy price

Crazy why would they use a petrol motor at that price, Diesel gensets have been around since Noah and are about the same price.
Quieter, safer and more reliable.
Portable diesel gensets are starting to become cheaper but I have not seen a known brand yet, it will be interesting to see if they become popular.

Welcome guys and wow for you, planning a big trip around Oz

We are currently travelling around Oz from Melb ... and we've made it as far as the SW corner of WA.

No-one ever mentions Kipor generators. Nationally supported, equal in all specs to both Honda and Yamaha incl noise, output and consumption.

We have a Kipor GS2600 on the farm and is our domestic power supply. It has literally had the guts flogged out of it for years. Spank me, but its never been serviced, lives outside rain hail and shine and is very neglected, but like ol' Yella keeps loving us

It has never once let us down, and i suspect has lived through the equivalent of 100 average camp lifetimes.

Kipor is cheaper than both Honda and Yamaha and a very under rated unit.

We have the Kipor GS2000 model in the van. As @peterg says, with solar we have not really "needed", but you guys will find it convenient with the little people for the microwave, sterilizing etc. We apparently "need" it for the Xbox

An extra van battery and inverter may provide enough 240v to get by

Using the genny for aircon youll need to carry extra fuel. Our genny will run the aircon for 6 hours on a 3.5ltr tank.

Good luck with you trip planning.
