Anywhere in the great outdoors
Hi we are looking at buying our 10 year old a tablet to fill with e books for Christmas.
I have had a look at a few site and am now totally confused!

Here are a few questions I have if anyone can help me:

1. Where are the best sites to get free books for mum, dad and junior?
2. When you have downloaded onto your PC does it need to be in a different format to move onto your tablet?
3. Can Kindle books be moved from PC onto a tablet or are they only for Kindle?

Any input would be great.

Thanks

I have an Android (actually a Dell Streak 7) which I use mainly as an e-book reader. It has a kindle reader which was on it when I bought it although I think is a free download. I have no problem reading e-books which I get from a mate. So to answer your points,
1. Sorry I don't know which sites are best.
2, No, they just copy the same as moving files on the computer.
3. Yes, Kindle books can be read on a tablet with the Kindle reader.

Same here on the iPad. There is the apple delivered iBooks app but I use the kindle app also.
There are some free iBook downloads but the book titles are extremely limited.

For a child I would recommend buying an ipad. Will your 10 year old be playing games as well? Games are better on Apple by a long way. Our family has both Apple and Samsung Android Tablets, Android is OK for browsing the internet. Our kids don't like Android, all their friend use Apple, they use Ipads at school. My daughter who is in year 7 has over half her books in her ipad as the school sets it up that way. At least with Apple, you can in most cases update the device when a new IOS comes out. With Android, you are stuck with the system your runs on. With Apple if you family have multiple devices on the same account, then when you buy a book, it will be shared to the other devices, same with games. If you want to buy an app on Apple it is easy with an ITunes card, Android in Australia still does not have an equivalent system to the best of my knowledge unless you use your credit card online. There will be just as many people say the opposite to me, but with 3 kids (9,11,13) they all love their Apple stuff, they are just easy to use.

We got our kids 2 iPad minis. Not so much for the books but movies and games. The iPad mini is a great size for kids as it easily doubles as an in car movie screen, the small size allows it to easily be attached to the back of a head rest so they can watch movies while travelling.

I'm a welded on iPad fan. Great for audio books and free podcasts as well. Keeps me quiet for hours. Even got hooked on Andy Griffiths 13 Storey Tree House (iBook). Mrs XF says I sometimes act like a 10 year old so I'm qualified to recommend. Then there's all the great apps including Kindle and Newsstand. Tons of entertaining and educational stuff out there. On your "grand tour" the iPad can be used to keep a journal, store photos, etc.
