Have you thought about camping at Brown Bros winery? @mfexpanda or @mrsmfexpanda did a review on it. Some nice spots around Tocumwal but that might be a bit out of the way. On our way to Canberra at xmas we stayed at Glenrowan cp not flash but friendly owners and only charged $25 for the night.

Tocumwal would be a bit out of the way I think, however the winery and Glenrowan are good options all of which should put use there just on dusk if all goes well as we can't depart till around 1230/1pm
I'll need a trip to the Big Green Shed for a sealable bucket for the winery (grey water), though if not we'll certainly be dropping buy there on the way back ;)

We'll we didn't make it to any of the suggested spots before dark as we didn't get away till 1245 and the better half decided power was required, we landed in the Holbrook Tourist Park just on dark at 530, didn't make it as far as I would have liked but all good as I was stuffed after starting work at 3am, just meant an early start next morning leaving the park just before day break. Great little park on the southern end of Holbrook with easy drive through access and reasonably quiet despite having the highway behind and 24hr Roadhouse out front.
Oh and if your passing you've got to visit the Holbrook Bakery, YUMMO.
