I bled the brains of many before Christmas when contemplating whether we need an inverter and came to the conclusion it was really only to use the coffee maker.

so...on advice...from @chartrock and others I think..I ordered a Bialetti stove top coffee maker.

It's arrived, been tested and is great. The espresso is as good as I remember from years ago (pre coffee pods) and it's efficient on gas .....so I'm happy.

I promised to report back.

G'day @Dobbie. I am afraid i have never used the Bialetti, I think @Moto Moto may have one and recommended it . I just have a stainless steel plunge coffee maker for when off grid.

I found another solution that works great .... I purchased a Minipresso portable espresso machine (off Amazon) it takes capsules, you add hot water (boiled on the gas stove) into a chamber and manually "Pump" the water through ... = great expresso without power !!
There are versions that take ground beans, as well as the capsule version.
I like capsules as they make less mess

I use Nespresso as I have found the one that I like ... (I also have a 230v machine in the van that I use when on the grid)

I understand that any Nespresso compatible capsules will work with the manual machine

We really like our Bialetti coffee. We upgraded our Bialetti early last year to a larger one that is induction capable. We now can stop at roadside turn on inverter, use our $50 eBay inverter hotplate and make either tea or good coffee without turning on the gas. So far our main problem on long trips is when our really nice (Cosmorex, from Fyshwick ACT) coffee runs out finding decent coffee in some places is hard. We carry a fair bit of home ground coffee in the van fridge, but after a few weeks we run out.

Cosmorex won Australian coffee roaster of the year last year, we are spoilt having them ½ hour away.
