that it is 12 months ago that we all arrived at Cameron's Corner? Yep, we arrived Tuesday and left Wednesday for the mad dash home. We did the bone shaking, teeth rattling section from Lyndhurst to Merty Merty on the Monday and the last section on the Tuesday morning. 436 kilometres, about 12 hours driving time.
What a trip. We left Melbourne on the Friday in reasonably calm weather. Saturday saw us leave Nhill in some of the wildest weather the south east had seen for a very long time. No wonder we battled keeping up the progress. Those strong winds were to follow us for the next three days. And the Strzelecki track was in dreadful condition. In places the corrugation were so bad we couldn't hear a thing above the rattling and shaking. In places we were down to 20 kmh.
But... we were glad to be driving on old bone shaker. Because our old 80 was old and we were forced to keep our speed down, we may possibly have saved ourselves a lot more damage to Swifty that we had. The rivets on one door hinge let go. That was all the damage for the whole trip.
The run home was a breeze. Good roads all the way. Yep.
And we would do it all again in a heart beat. I had Cathy, then 7, and Timothy, then 4, with me. They loved it. It was a big adventure to them. And I have been asked when can we do it again. We ate bad food. Drunk way too much fizzy drinks. Showering wasn't high on our list of priorities. And when we arrived back home, the wife held her nose and pointed to the bathroom!
That was the last time Swifty was used. Yes, it's 12 months since Swifty was cleaned out, well, almost.
For those of you who might be interested, we are taking Swifty to Kurth Kiln, subject to weather, on the 27th-29th November. We are going to camp the weekend with some friends. However, all welcome. And it's free.
