Full height vans are quieter and better for heating cooling, but they are heavier and drag more air when towing
I went the full height and am happy with it.
What price is the van and what year ?
I found that anything around 2012 was about $45k

If you have a tug to accomodate the weight I would personally go the 18 as it would be quieter and last you longer in my opinion (not as much fiddling around or leaks to worry about). But the 17 would be more versatile in terms of bedding options as the kids get older. We have to go a 17.56 for a family of 5 due to our tow car but I'd personally prefer a full caravan to an expanda/poptop just for noise factor and fuss free set up hassles.

If you get it then contact the transport department, My sister recently bought one from QLD, once you cross the WA border if the van is not in your name Third party licencing insurance will not be valid.
You must purchase a temporary movement permit http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/get-a-temporary-movement-permit.asp
(A vehicle currently licensed in another Jurisdiction that has been purchased by a resident of Western Australia.)
(it is valid for 48hrs only) so if you can not get to a licencing center within 48hrs of crossing the border you must then purchase another or they may be able to extend it.

Also make sure you have your electric break controller sorted :)

Hey @Lisyloo317 we are also a family of five with an 8, 6 and 3 year old. We ended up with the 17:56-2 OB for a couple of reasons, it firstly was the right weight for us to tow behind our Prado and secondly provided us with all the "fruit" we wanted from a van for our trip next year around Oz and our other trips away be it in a caravan park or free camping.

We never considered the full height versions as the weight would potentially have been a concern but if pulling with a Ranger you are probably fine, but also the fuel economy increases slightly...... (but what a few extra litres of fuel per 100km if you are on holiday's)

At the end of the day I think both would suit a family of five, they both have some advantages and disadvantages, sounds like you guys are keen on getting something pretty soon though which means you will have to weigh up those pros and cons..... so good luck with the decision either way we will want to see lots of pics and modifications of the van you end up choosing. :)
