Closure of free camping at ulupna island along the murray river near Strathmerton vic . This was a great free camp spot with many sandy beaches and safe access for kids to play near the water & enjoying fishing and canoeing.Strathmerton traders fear impact of Ulupna Island
local news

The closure of a popular camping area at the eastern end of the Barmah National Park has angered local traders.

Concrete barricades have been placed on entry roads to Ulupna Island, preventing visitors and locals from accessing the area.

Jodie Franklin from the Strathmerton general store said the area has been closed indefinitely because of the poor condition of roads and facilities.

She said if people could not camp there, a lot of nearby businesses would struggle.

"That means that people aren't going to come here anymore, they're going to find somewhere new for their camping and once you find somewhere new that you like you don't tend to go back to that old area and there will be a lot of businesses either go broke, a lot of jobs be lost," she said.

She said campers and other visitors spent a lot of money locally.

"A lot of the local businesses in town, we're only a small community, the majority of the businesses rely on our camping season during Easter, Melbourne Cup weekend and Christmas mainly," she said.

"We're going to lose a lot of business with campers coming into town and resupplying, coming in for food."

A Parks Victoria spokeswoman said two tracks were closed two weeks ago because of damage caused by heavy rain.

She said staff were assessing the need for repairs as a safety precaution before a decision to reopen the tracks could be made.

There are some narrow minded bean counters in high places who just try to justify their existence with hair brained ideas. >:( Hopefully, someone with common sense will sort it out. :hail:

sounds like they need to create a local land care group, apply for a grant and fix the road and move the barrier themselves, as red tape will likely never see it open. what a shame for the local shops etc and future kids growing up wanting some where to camp as more and more places close. i hope the barriers don't prevent emergency services , given the fire season round the corner.

Yep. Been going there for over 20 years and was heading there for the long weekend but ended up at Torrumbury.
Spoke to some rangers while there and they told us the closure was due to track damage caused by 4x4ers over the wet season.
Not happy.
You can get out in your 4b and have plenty of fun without wrecking it for everyone! A little consideration goes a long way!
Just hope they open it again soon....favourite spot by far.

Was there over the weekend paying it a visit. Plenty of nicely graded tracks to get in and out on.

And yep... we'll be taking the van there... as soon as possible...

No problem @mfexpanda... Pretty sure it was Ulupna Beach. Took a couple of pics. Given it's a bit of a trek I imagine it might be a school holiday job or long weekend. Would imagine it would pack out during the peak times and you'd want to get up early to try and secure a spot.

We were up there at Easter and some of the tracks were tragic. Glad to hear they've repaired them. We are heading up at cup weekend with a big group a lot of guys in cars, so easy tracks for them. yay.

Hi guys just spent the cup long weekend up at ulupna island just up from pump beach in among the trees as the place was absolutely packed. Just wanted to voice my disappointment at the rubbish and broken tents, gazebos and so forth that other campers left behind on th nsw and vic side not to mention a bunch of idiots hitting golf balls into the murry and at our camp with children around. If this keeps up i can see it being closed again. We filled one of our utes with other people's rubbish. We caught a group dumping theirs and told them off.... Some people don't deserve these areas. If you spot someone dumping rubbish give em what for guys. Clean free camping areas = open free camping. Thanks guys..........
