Gidday all
I pick up my 1649 - 3 this weekend and currently have a petrol xtrail and I am a bit worried about tow capacity. I'm thinking of upgrading to a mitsubishi challenger (good deals at moment) just wondering if anyone has got a similar set up and if so what are the pros and cons.
Thanks in advance.

Hi @muzza, I have a my14 Challenger (auto) and will be honest I am not impressed. Around town I average 10.5-11.0l/100 and when towing our 14.44-4 averages around 14.5l/100. I towed the same van with my my10 Hilux and averaged 11-12.5 towing for same trips. I did the auto struggles on long climbs (eg Cunninghams Gap). I have been caught a couple of times where I wouldn't consider I was pushing it but it changed from 4th to 2nd and remained there until the climb was over. Must have been the auto temp but no warning lights come on. It is a nice car to drive and do like it but am disappointed. When the lease comes up I wi be changing back to a 3L vehicle. Please note that this is only my experience and thoughts. I know of others who love theirs but they don't tow.

BJ.

Thanks bj
I am going with the manual if I decide to go that way (didn't even drive the auto)
My major concern was with the coil springs on the rear. The salesman is saying it is not a problem, he has sold heaps for towing but he is trying to sell a vehicle.thanks for the feedback
I will let you know how it pans out

I tow 17 55 5 sh disco 2020kg, I use HR WDH, just went to all the usual suspects in central Australia, 8422 km only downside was the 70 ltr tank, 120 litres would be heaps better. I sat on 100 to 110 the whole way. My brother towed 2600kg van with 2014 challenger, he sat on 90 kmh and used 4ltr per 100 more than I did. I only got a challenger as I got it for trade price off family, it was cheap. I call it the MitsuShitty but I have to say I am pretty happy with it. We also did some 4wd tracks and they both went really well. The factory tyres on my brothers slipped a bit going up hill but mine didn't as I had better off roading tyres.

Thanks for the feedback.
Looks like back to the drawing board.

oh well as long as I'm in the panda the back yard isn't so bad
Cheers! !!!

G'day Muzza. I had a Challenger. Good vehicle but very noisy. And they don't like corners. But good for towing. And it dont cost much more towing. Mind you, I only have the Swift. Expanda might be different.
Lots of engine noise in the cab and be careful of the Air con.

Hey guys
Thanks for the response.
After much thought and discussion we picked up new challenger yesterday. (Haven't driven it yet wifey hasn't given permission) bull bar and tow bar are on but still waiting on winch and snorkel.
Taking her to maryborough camping show tomorrow ( bout an hour down the road) then on to sunshine coast, around 6 hour round trip.
Hope it does what it is supposed to.
But wifey is happy so life should be good for a while at least
Will post some photos directly
See ya out there

If your after a WDH I have one thats only 8 months old used once, its genuine mitsushitti part for the there tow bar. Proberly cost to much to send to you but. Nothing wrong with it had to change to HR bar as you can't get adjustable goose neck for mitsushitti tow bar and van sat to nose down due to underslung axles.

Thanks for the offer mate.but yeah you're right I think frieght might kill me. Hopefully won't need em. Apart from the brakes locking on the xtrail towed the expanda fine so the new one should be able to do just fine (fingers crossed)

Hi @muzza, congrats hope it works out well for you. Will be interested in comparing fuel usage on it if you don't mind. I do like the car, but it's funny, I don't love it like I have others. Just me though.
Will also be curious to see if the snorkel makes a difference with fuel economy. I have heard that they can improve it somewhat.

Hey Muzza, just wondering what year was your Xtrail and how'd it tow the 16 ? I've got a 2012 xtrail waiting on delivery of our 16-49-4 and it tows our old camper trailer loaded with bikes water wood and whatever else we need without a problem. Has anyone else towed an Expanda with an Xtrail and how did it tow ?

Hey @Bmhdg76
I feel the same. I'm not a huge fan of mitsubishi but what can I say?
After scouring the net, talking to slightly bewildered grey nomads at traffic lights and then following them to talk more, ,ambushing people in carparks it all comes down to budget and salesmanship .can't speak highly enough of the dealership I bought it off (free snorkal, window tint and half price bullbar) I wanted something that will take me there and back, it seems to fit. As with any purchase only time will tell .
For sure will keep you posted on how it all goes.

Cheers

Hey delano
It was a 2009 model.2.4l petrol 6 speed manual.
I didn't tow it far (20km or so) and the expanda had a dodgy controller on it so the brakes locked every time I even looked sideways at the brakes but I didn't have any worries on the move.sorry I can't help you more.

Hi all. I have a 2010 LS challenger (manual) and we tow a 2014 17.56 2 OB with it. The vehicle has been fitted with OME shocks and heavier springs and has a tunit chip fitted. It also has drawers, a roof rack and awning (I only mention for reasons of weight and drag). We get around 8.5 to 9L/100km around town and we live in a hilly area. With the van loaded on we get somewhere between 12,5 and 14L/100km mostly depending on the amount of wind. Tend to tow around the 90-95 mark depending on traffic and other conditions. It's actually not much more than the camper trailer (1.25 ton) we upgraded from though I tended to sit on 100km/h.

I have found the vehicle to be very good at towing and keeping the fuel bill down. I compare this to friends with a slightly older expanda outback towed by a Landcruiser and we're less than half their fuel consumption.

You definitely know you're towing something but the vehicle will happily chug along at speed in fifth on the flat and it's unusual to have to change down as far as third for the steep bits. For those about to jump on me about towing in fifth, Mitsu says it's fine provided you are changing down when you hit the hills. They have inspected the gearbox after about 80,000Km of towing (50k camper, 30k expanda) and no issues so I ain't arguing with them.

I'm very happy with this setup and expect you'll be happy with your purchase too but as with any vehicle, they come off the floor for general use and you always need to consider what you'll be using the vehicle for and whether it needs some modification to do the job properly.

See you on the road!!

Hi, we have a 2012 challenger manual, haven't picked up our van yet (16.49-4 not outback) so can't say what it's like to tow it. Had a camper trailer and it was fine, also fine in 5 the gear at 100. Just drop it back on hills. Ours has done 52000 klm and has just had anew engine under warranty and the gear box rebuilt... The engine was over heating and dumping out all the coolant, was poor machining of the block in the assembly process. The gear box was the 3rd gear hub wearing causing it to block out gears. Apparently its all upgraded parts in it now and shouldn't happen again. It is going fine now. Have to see what it tows the new van like

I am a mechanic and worked at a multi franchise dealer which included mitsubishi, so they looked after me when we bought it, and when it had to be fixed.

We love the car and it was a good price. We have a ARB bullbat and heavy duty springs and shocks. Might get a snorkel and exhaust one day. Have to convince the minister.

Happy motoring.
