Ok.. So since getting back from Nagambie on Mon arvo the Caravan has been sitting peacefully out the front of the house while I wait for the heater to arrive and install. Partially because im lazy and partially because i didn't want the storage yard to put it away for me and then have to go to the trouble of pulling it out again in a few days time. Last night I get a knock at the door from a friendly council inspector telling me if I don't remove the van he was going to fine me for storing a heavy vehicle in an urban area. My reaction went something along the lines of 'what heavy vehicle?' He then proceeded to show me the national law that prohibits any vehicle over 4.5t and longer than 7.5m from parking in any urban area for longer than an hour.
I'd never heard of this before and got the tape measure out tho check. Sure enuf it was bang on 8.1m.
Have spent the day considering what to do and making phone calls to everyone I thought may have come across this before. A few had heard of the rule but never thought it would partain to a caravan. The wash up is that after removing the rear spare carrier (which i was always going to do) the van is going in on Wed to have the a-frame moved in 200mm to make the length 7.48m long. I then visit Vicroads and get the van remeasured to update the rego details and thats it. CIL only proviso was it had to be done by a reputable business so in comes Westcoast Trailers with a quote to do the job for $250.00. Cant wait for the next visit from my inspector mate with his tape measure. Interested if anyone else has had this issue anywhere??

I just drove thru Newcomb saw it parked outside Aldi near jayco dealership. I have heard that rule but thought it was trucks only thought it had to be combined weight and length. the amount of vans we regularly see parked in front yards or on the road council do jack in melton and bacchus marsh. It must be one of your neighbour's surely they ccould've talked to you first regards heather

I recall one of the Mothers Group Mafia whinging her husband's truck had been advised to be moved as they park it on the street over night. I could also look out my front door and spot a semi trailer parked on the road. And we're not exactly far from the council offices. Whilst it might be the "law", I'm with @mfexpanda, I reckon someone might have said something.

The wording of the regulation refers to Heavy Vehicle (over 4.5 tonne GVM) or Long vehicle being over 7.5m.

A vehicle includes a trailer or caravan, so technically they are correct.

Looking at the actual reg it is clearly aimed at trucks, but the way it's worded, vans over 7.5m (which includes mine) can be caught up.

Luckily I've not have to had the discussion with our council, touch wood

I heard of this talked to someone at a van park who said they love to get a bigger van although then cannot leave it out the front? I asked why they said as you get fined. our section 32 we cannot leave it in the front yard, hence the giant gate and the van in the backyard

I would say some one dobbed you in..

Ours sits on our front yard (our block is 15m wide, so it's a bit squishy). Considering our house is a castle (sorry for the pun) the massive size of the van fits in well. Plus, our neighbours 2 doors down have theirs on the front yard too.
Considering our council, main roads and the wa government hates us at the moment I'm surprised we haven't had anything said yet.

No @cruza driver it was on the street with 2 wheels up on the kerb.. I spoke to the council office today and they said there was no record of a complaint so I'm guessing my inspector friend may just be living in the area and has gone lone wolf on this one..
