Good afternoon fellow expanda owners hope everyone pulled up ok after the new years eve parties:wacko:
as were not the best we thought we would sit down inside with the a/c flat out as its 40deg and do some more planning to our kimberly trip which is coming around too quickly 4 months and counting ...
Question 1...can you take the vans up to cape leveque and camp as ive been told no caravans allowed only campers ?
2..how far up do you travel b4 droping off the van to go to mitchell falls ?
3..is it worth staying at wyndham anywhere ive heard the views are to die for at night ?

cheers Russell

Hi Russell,

As far as I know you can only take campers to the Cape Leveque camp grounds, we took our Jayco Eagle to Middle Lagoon which allows caravans about half way up the Cape Leveque road, it was a great spot right on the ocean and then just did day drives.

On the Gibb River when we was there you could leave your van at Drysdale station for free to travel up to the Mitchell falls.

Hope this helps.

Christian

Did the Gibb River Rd in 2006 so my info is not too relevant but we drove up to Kalumbaru. The road to Drysdale station was OK but was lousy from there to Kalumbaru. Crossing the King Edward River on the way to Mitchell Falls can be a bit dicey, depending on the time of year in relation to the 'WET'.

Returning across the King Edward River. . . . The outbound crossing 2 days earlier was over the bonnet.

The road to Kalumbaru south of Drysdale Station . . . . . . . Crossing the Pentacost River, G.R.R.

It is still worth the trip. We also took a flight from Drysdale Station over the falls and out to the Archapeligo and back along the Prince Regent River, a great flight.

We did not make Wyndham but was told the views over the rivers are terrific. Have a great trip.

How did I miss this thread??..
Anyway.....as Christian pointed out, caravans are not allowed up to Cape Leveque (Kooljamon), only camper trailers.
We too camped at Middle Lagoon for 6 days. You can actually get powered sites up there too if required.

We left our van at the King Edward River campground before doing a day trip into Mitchell Falls (spent 2 nights at KER).
The road in when we went in was dry, no water crossing involved, but the kalumburu road looks very familiar.

Makes me wish I was heading up there again......../sigh..

Can anyone tell me if it would be suitable to take a 16.49-1 Expanda (NOT the Outback type) up the GRR from west to east in late May? I understand there could be significant dust entry problems with the van (which I can sort out) but my biggest concern is the river crossings. For example, can you get one of these Expandas across the Pentecost River? Are there other crossings where the entry / departure angles would be dodgy at best for this van? I am considering doing an axle mod to increase the ride height of the van but am reluctant to do so unless it is unavoidable. Any advice / experience would be appreciated.
Cheers.
