Hi guys. We are planning a trip to Cape York in September. Taking our 17 foot outback expanda. Has anyone done this trip with an Expanda???? Any tips on what to do up there, or what not to do ( or where not to take the van) ????
Thanks

A couple on here have taken theirs to the top.
When we did it we left ours in Cooktown and tented it, as we weren't sure of the road conditions.

Once we got up there we realised that our's would've made it easily using the Bypass roads and the PDR. Then just a couple of nights camping along the OTT.

That is what I'll do next time, use the van as a base up at Bamaga or Seisia and the day trips or overnight in a tent.

We did the trip last year, drop tyre pressures to 26 pound, don't race, dust seal EVERYTHING and you will have a ball. We based at Bramwell station and did a day trip on the Southern section of the OTT, then again at the Jardine river to do the northern section. We took the van out towards vryllia and camped at Crystal Creek, this is a far as you will get the van on that road. We made the mistake of trying to take the van to Elliot falls, don't bother it is hard work.

As @Holden_man added, have a look at our trip report and if I can help any further please ask.

I have just read your trip @crackacoldie , & now I am even more impatient to go. Is there any free camping along the way, or does everything have to be pre booked (including caravan parks)? We were really hoping to camp at Eliot Falls. Why was it so difficult to get in there? Is there anywhere nearby to leave the van?
We have a scupper vent in the roof, & with the vents covered we have not had any trouble with red dust before. Are there any camping spots that you recommend???
Thanks

I can recommend every camping spot! Loved it up there. Only the spots in national parks, like Elliot falls, need to be pre booked. We camped for free at a few spots and there are plenty of places. First issue of getting into Elliot falls was how narrow the track was, with tight bends and some pretty big side slopes, then we got to a 3ft deep water crossing, I wasn't happy to drag the van through that. We left the van just off the track and did the swim thing at Elliot and fruit bat. The two halves of the track can easily be done in two day trips.

I agree with @crackacoldie.
Tow your van up to Bamaga using the PDR and the bypass roads.

I wouldn't be taking it anywhere along the OTT, far too rough for a van.
We camped for 2 nights at Eliot Falls and drove to Fruit Bat Falls for a day trip.

On the bypass roads it's roughly 2 hours from the start of the OTT at Bramwell Junction to the Jardine River ferry.

Thanks for your info guys, definitely not planning on taking the van on the old telegraph track. Would the van get in to Fruit bat falls for a visit???

Umm.........there's no camping at Fruit Bat Falls, it's a day visit only, so I don't know why you'd want to take the van in there.
From memory, you'd struggle to get in and out of there with the van on, parking was at a premium.
