Hi all.
So we're heading to Broken Hill for a look around in the coming weeks and wondering if anyone has any advice on points of interest there and along the way or any advice at all really. We'll have a two van convoy, my Expanda 17.56-2OB and my mates 17' Stering OB. I have a pertol/gas 120 Prado and the other car is 120 Prado Diesel.

From Melbourne we'll be heading up through Bendigo, Swan Hill, Balranald then up through Lake Mungo, Minindee and then to Broken Hill and Silverton.

Will take the more direct route home through Mildura, Ouyen etc.

Plan is to free camp along the way using the the Camps 7 book and Hema maps as a guide.

So has anyone completed this trek lately?

Have not been along this route before so appreciate any advice or input.

Thanks all :)

Hey @jimgoose we travelled from Mildura through Pooncarie on our way to Menindee and Broken Hill 10 months ago. We stopped at a farm stay 'Bindara Station' and camped on the banks of the Darling. We paid a camp fee, but wasn't much from memory. They had allocated camp sites along the river with access to showers and toilet if needed. The Pooncarie to Menindee road is pretty rough and dusty, so it's a pretty slow trip in but the scenery and location is well worth it. The Kinchega woolshed just south of Menindee is also worth a look. I think there was some camping available on the river around there too.

Thanks MD. Primrose (or Penrose?) Park is where we thought we may need to stay if we could find no free camping.

So numbez, do you recall what speeds you had to stick to, was there any damage to vehicle or van ?

Yeah, you could track along at about 20-50km/hr in the worse spots, then virtually stop for each cattle grid. There are numerous of these. Took us about 1.5 hours from Pooncarie to Bindara. The touring van which travelled with us sustained a bit to damage to the underneath from hitting one of the cattle grids at a decent speed.

Will be avoiding the caravan parks if possible, we usually free camp unless we have no choice. There looks to be a lot of camp sites along river drive, anyone camped along there?
